Belrun is so close to getting this damned flu strain to calm down in this one egg. She copies the change across to a few more eggs' worth, iterates, writes everything down, and Fetches the egg that is getting scary into her pot of simmering water before it makes a break for it. It's getting on toward dark and if she keeps working she's going to have to do it by candlelight, and she doesn't like that - it's already too easy to bump into things when she can see them. She calls it a day and closes up the lab for the night and heads out to walk over to the university cafeteria. It's a nice evening, and it's Flatbread Night, and she's in a generally good mood.
"Shavri reads Rethwellani - I think she learned it for foreign texts on Healing, actually, that's not a thing most people do but Shavri's - herself. And then she's gotten more practice since Randi became King, she ends up helping him with things and it comes up."
Melody leads Belrun inside and to a door, which she unlocks. "And this is your room! Here, I can quickly show you around..." It's reasonably spacious, and has indoor plumbing, and there's a writing desk with lots and lots of paper in a box and several bottles of spare ink.
Savil stands just outside the door. "The agreement was that you were to have at least two guards at all times, I think, and not Heralds. I assume you'd like Chalan to stay for now as one of them? We've also vetted some of the Guard locally, you and Chalan are welcome to speak to them and decide who you want."
And a few minutes later, a woman in blue gets there. "I'm General Lissa Ashkevron. Vanyel's sister, so it'd be totally reasonable on your part not to want me as a guard if that seems like a conflict of interest, but I can introduce you to the other people we vetted."
"That's not the kind of conflict of interest that worries me. Mostly I'd be worried if you're particularly religious. Or take bribes or anything but that I don't realistically expect people to admit to."
Lissa chuckles. "No, I'm not particularly religious." She introduces a dozen other people, all of somewhat lower ranks than she is, but they're polite and give off vibes of competence and none of them are particularly religious even though lots of Guard members in general follow Kernos.
Belrun, supplemented by occasional remarks from her father, asks them questions and ultimately doesn't think any of them are especially likely to be divine plants or anything like that and they can all rotate in on whatever schedule makes sense to them.
Lissa's not going to take tonight, then, because she just got back from Karse and is very busy, but she may jump in the rotation at some point.
Melody smiles at Belrun. "It's just about suppertime. Guessing you'd rather get settled tonight and save meetings for tomorrow, but it's up to you."
"I don't know, is there a chance that having meetings today instead of tomorrow will shorten this entire business at all? It's very uncomfortable."
"Right. Lifebond. That makes sense. I'm not sure if it will, make it go faster I mean, but everyone else is around and available, I can go let Savil know and have something arranged within half an candlemark."
Melody heads out. Supper arrives for Belrun a few minutes later, with extras for Chalan and the other guard who's settled in for now.
And Savil is back another few minutes after that. "We have a meeting time arranged - whenever you're done eating, if that's all right...?"
"The plan was somewhere else. Here would get a bit crowded, it'll be a few more people."
"Okay." She puts away the last of the greens and gets up. "Lead the way. Slowly please, I trip if I exceed a walk and sometimes even if I don't."
"Of course." Savil keeps it to a sedate pace. It's getting dark outside, but she ensures the path is very well-lit with a mage-light. The walk isn't far, only five minutes or so even going very slowly. Savil glances back to make sure Belrun's guards are following.
"In here." The wing they arrive at looks even older than most of the buildings around them, it definitely dates to the Founding. The meeting-room they reach, though, is spacious and comfortably furnished and has rugs and tapestries and a fireplace. Savil ushers Belrun to an armchair chair at one end, a good ten feet from where everyone else is seated.
