"Because... everything is okay so we can communicate the things we want to communicate with words? And we don't have to... hide the things we're talking about? --Except Marlo has something he wants to hide related to me being colors?"

"Not even that, I think because -- things here are simple, and people don't need to be complicated about them? Except Marlo is complicated about you being colors, which comes out to the same conclusion, but it's not about hiding things really." 

"Maybe... someone should... talk to him?"

"He didn't exactly seem great at being talked to? But yeah, probably someone should. And by someone I mean us." 

"I think... I should. Because he tried to talk to me before and it might be scary if there are two people? And maybe I can invite him to go get pizza with us and then we can talk to him without everyone being around?" 

"Yeah, probably the best plan. Good luck?"

He goes back inside and looks for Marlo.

Marlo is being perfectly social, saying brief and casual hellos to lots of people and not really having involved conversations with anybody. 

Lee waits for a break in the conversation and then says to Marlo "heydoyouwanttogogeticecreamorsomethingwithmeandraine." Then he pauses and says "--uh, or pizza or burgers or something, I guess you might want lunch, really we can get anything--"

"Lunch or ice cream or something with you and Raine sounds great," he says without giving himself a chance to think about it, and -- did Lee mean right now, Lee might not have meant right now, why is he even doing this avoiding Lee has worked wonderfully for years, NOT thinking about that, he follows Lee. 

Probably he is doing this because Lee just smiled at him!

(Mostly from relief that he is not utterly humiliated, but still.)

Yes that is probably why but he is not thinking about that, is he. 

"So," he says to Raine this time because Raine is less of an obstacle course to think about, "lunch or ice cream or something?" 

"Pizza sounds good, I'm actually hungry." 

Then he will follow them slightly mechanically to the pizza place. 

Once they've ordered, Lee says, "The thing I am now is called 'colors.' --My bed is colors too, we haven't turned anything else colors yet."

"We think -- or I think, anyway, that you become colors or make other things become colors when there are strong emotions that don't usually happen in Pleasantville involved." 

Marlo doesn't look like he knows what to think about that.

"...do you... know anything? About colors?"

"....sometimes people turn colors gradually. Not their whole body, just a little bit, and it -- goes away, if you don't think about whatever it is you were thinking about when it happened." 

"Oh wow! That's really cool! Can I see?"

....Marlo lifts up the hem of his shirt and, sure enough, his stomach is no longer grey. 

"What made you turn colors? --It's strange because all the things that made me turn colors came from Raine and I don't think you know her at all."

"You," he says before he can talk himself out of saying it. 

(He covers the colorful patch of skin back up.)
