Two days after the twins left to pack up and settle things where they've been living, Stephen gets a call shortly after dinner.
Once everyone's arrived, Alex tentatively asks about continuing their lessons.
"We've been doing the exercises you showed us," he tells Temple, "But I'm pretty sure we've reached the point where we need more information than just that and what Jay put together from the rituals you guided him through."
"Temple is going to be with us for a few more days before going back to work. Do you mind if I continue mentoring you guys then?"
"Yeah, that sounds fine," he tells Topher. Then, to Temple, "We're definitely actually getting somewhere with the breath exercises - I think I might be getting close to figuring out my Breath gift, though I can't really be sure, I suppose."
"We can check your progress after breakfast, but that's promising."
In that case they can eat breakfast, chat about plans for the day and then time to magic study!
Magic! Jamie comes along as well, and they demonstrate their progress thus far. They figured out how to transfer their Breath between each other in the past few days, and have definitely reached the point where they could use that aspect of their lifeforce for things beyond Jamie's Breath gift.
That's amazing progress. Temple determines that Alex's breath gift should pop up any day now. And then he walks then both through some life force exercises.
They can work on those for a while, then, though Jamie gets steadily more distracted the longer it goes on. Eventually Alex nudges him and gives him a pointed look.
"Don't use your gift," he adds to the silent conversation.
"Yeah, I'll go see if Franklyn will take me," he agrees sheepishly. "If you don't mind me cutting out?" He asks Temple.
"I am of the philosophy that you should teach only when they want to learn. Go ahead."
Alex watches him leave, and then turns back to Temple - there's actually something he'd meant to bring up at some point, and now's as good a time as any.
...He's not really sure where to start on the topic, though.
"...So. I have a health gift now."
"Do I need to do anything with it. Or can I just let it be until I can swap for something else."
"Oh, no, you don't need to do anything with it. You haven't been using it unintentionally, right? Some of the more defensive ones can be automatic."
Snort, "It's not anything you could call defensive. I've only used it the once, when it first activated. It's... fire. Generation, and control, I think."
"Okay, what exactly do you want to do with it? We don't need to put it into practice to know things about it."
"I don't actually want to do anything with it. I just wasn't sure if we'd need to know more about it to swap it into the vault."
Head shake. "We might need to do some more health-based lifeforce exercises, but those can be done without dealing with your gift. And are useful to other skills as well."
"Alright - should we start on those soon or should they wait until after we've been attuned to the vault in the first place?"
