"Speaking of, I'm about ready to go. It was nice meeting you, Erica."

"Sure. Nice meeting you too."

Sarah shrugs, waves a little and follows David out.

"I think I'm gonna head off before my aunt decides to be dramatic and call the sheriff on me — again. I'll see you tomorrow? I have this stupid Sharing thing I have to go to after school, but after?"

"Try not to bore yourself to death. See you around."

David buys his things and heads home.

He works on his homework. David doesn't plan on attending all of his classes. He's still going to pass. He puts on his latest CD while he works. Around dinner time, Megadeath reminds him to feed them. He dips into his rat stockpile and feeds the greedy little thing. Spawn doesn't get that impatient. David gives him a few more today.

Classes are boring. He goes to enough that the school doesn't try too hard to apply consequences to him. With Sarah busy, he decides to put in an appearance at detention.

"Mr. Sommers, I'm glad you could join us. Your seat has been saved for you. Why don't you sit down, shut up, and please for the love of god, behave."

Punching a teacher is probably in bad form.

He sits down next to one of the least friendly-looking students.

There's not much to say. It's detention.

That’s the idea. He keeps to himself, finishes his homework, and watches the clock.

His neighbour eventually casts him a glance but dismisses him quickly and starts reading a thick chemistry book.

Checks out. David nods at him on his way out. He can't wait to catch up to Sarah. It's a long walk to the construction site, but he's not going to ask his mom for a ride.

He finds Sarah easily once he arrives. Though whether he can reach her... She smiles down at him from her position up on one of the buildings rafters.

"Have fun in detention?"

"Tons. Wish you were there. How was your thing?"

"Boring. They're planning this big initiation thing, so mostly we're being forced to do grunt work. We mostly just hid and read comics."

"Sounds like a good time. Who's 'we'?"

"Just a couple of other kids. The sheriff's son. Don't have a lot of options."

"Now you do."

He looks for a way up. He finds a handhold of sorts and comes up to join her. He's not that smooth about it, but he makes it up with a minimum of fuss.

"Thank god for the failure of civil improvement projects. In my last town, I had to hang out at the park."

"Well, if you could hang out anywhere. Or just. Stay anywhere. Where would you go?"

"Here is kind of nice. But if I could go anywhere...I've always wanted to check out the Amazon."

"And meet some hot Amazonian princesses?" she teases.

"Do you know any you can introduce me to? I could use the leg up on the competition."

There's a slight snicker, somewhere behind a tall section of wall.

Sarah spins and tries to spot the intruder. "Who goes there?"

He peers curiously over. Whoever it is doesn't look like they want to come out. He jumps down, ignoring the pain this causes. His mom would probably tell him not to get himself hurt in an abandoned construction site with one person he barely knows and a stranger, but he knows she's made worse mistakes.
