Of course he does.

That's the spirit. He takes it, and tries to put Jasper in a chokehold. He's not skilled enough to do much more than aggressive hugging.

He might be bigger than Jasper, but Jasper is a triple varsity athlete and knows what he's doing. He slips out of the chokehold and pushes David into the ground.

"You gotta know what you're messing with, kid."

Completely ineffectual struggling it is.

The gathering crowd parts.

"Boys, is there something I need to know?"

Jasper pushes the other boy away and steps away from him and towards the crowd. His shirt is ripped. "New kid here wanted to try out for the wrestling team. I try to tell him that the cafeteria wasn't the time or the place, but he insisted."

Sarah pushes forward and picks David up from the ground. "That's bullshit and you know it."

"How friendly of you, Mr. Martin. Why don't you show him what detention is like today after school? Mr. Haas-Sommers, I hope you'll be able to make it despite your injuries. Follow me to the nurse's office. Unless anyone would like to dispute that these boys got into a fight in the cafeteria? Ms. Nelson, I recommend you calm down before you join them."

Callie joins her brother in a conveniently timely fashion. She hooks arms with Jasper. United front.

"I'm sure there's no need for Jasper to go to detention. There's a big game coming up. Look, I'm sure someone saw what happened."

"Yeah. If the new kid has an attitude problem, that's for him to deal with," Matt says, jumping out of the woodwork.

"Fine. Everyone else, stop gawking. David, I expect to hear a good report from the teacher after getting detention on your first day."

She stalks off, business concluded.

"Welcome to Half Moon Bay, Haas. Try to learn the rules before it gets you in real trouble."

Sarah shoots then all an unimpressed look. "Next time, Jasper, when you have a problem with me don't take it out on the easiest target. Jealousy isn't a good look on you."

She then ignores all of them, does not make eye contact with Matt -- nope, not going there -- and helps David down the hall and outside. It is definitely not the way to the nurse's office.

"I take it back. This school is already more exciting than my last four. Congrats on being a part of that. Where are we headed?"

"Unless you get off on being poked and prodded by a vindictive nurse, I have a place not too far from here. Out of the way and Circle free."

"Sure, let's skip the prodding. Circle?"

"Jasper and his horde of pretty people. They call themselves 'the Circle'. Stereotypical popular kids with no morals."

"Were they the ones sucking up for him? Guess that's how popularity works everywhere. They wouldn't act so tough if I sicced Spawn on them."

"Spawn? Is that some sort of evil minion?"

"Pet snake. He'd make a better minion if his bite was worse than his hiss, but he's still pretty cool."

"Bet Jasper wouldn't handle him well. I'd pay to see that."

She leads him into a sand-covered construction site. It looks very abandoned.

"This where the teenage delinquents come to hang out?"

"Singular. I'm not the most popular delinquent around here. It's mostly just me and the coyotes."

"Hollywood really has been lying to me."

He looks up at the sky and howls. Or at least, imitates what he imagines a howl would sound like.

Sarah laughs and pushes him lightly. "Coyotes are overrated. Wolves are what we should be aiming for."

-- and she gives her best wolf howl. It's definitely ridiculous, she hasn't ever really heard what a wolf's howl sounds like outside of the movies.
