Plane shift can drop you up to five hundred miles from your intended destination.
This time they land in some woods, at sunset, near a remarkably flat and smooth path that looks like a lava flow or something.
But then how do you shop if you have a limited amount of money?
...oh well. They don't need food right now anyway. They will just admire all the stuff that's for sale and then leave.
They don't want to have trouble finding their way back to the IHOP so they don't wander too much further. Is there a temple?
The metal carts probably let cities be way more spread out. He's not convinced this is a good thing on the whole.
They go back to the IHOP and talk about what to do next.
"I take it we can't buy a plane shift."
"There're worse places to be stuck. Unless the vampire slayer's people are going to betray us."
"Doesn't mean that much, especially if they don't know if it affects their afterlife at all."
"No, but it's something. If this country doesn't work out we can hop one over, anyway, no reason to think we landed in the best place to be stuck for a couple of years. - we should ask who's in charge of it and so on."
"They have a weird concept of what's notable. No one mentioned that the city has a serious undead problem, either."
"They said lots of people don't know about magic. Maybe that includes not knowing about the undead?"
"They'd still notice if it's very rare to go outside at night and survive!"
"I'd expect any competent government to make it illegal to go out at night if people were mysteriously being murdered whenever they did and we couldn't solve the murders."
"We weren't making it obvious that we could handle ourselves. - and if someone had said vampires, I wouldn't have been confident we could, vampires are generally tougher than whatever we encountered last night."
"No. But I've heard you don't want to fight one, even as a group at our level, without preparation."
"I think that's because they have the magic drain and Dominate Person and that can turn sour for a party very fast if they're not prepared, rather than because the vampires we've heard of are necessarily different than the things we fought. We had Protection from Evil up, they aren't accustomed to clerics, we got a little lucky."
"They got several hits in and didn't take second-level spells off me."
"Huh. Maybe they are different. If there are very few magic users here I guess it wouldn't make sense for them to have an ability that's only useful against magic users."
