A spiteful telephone exchange?

People used to have to connect phone calls manually, like, there would be a person putting you through to whoever. But there were two competing undertakers and the one undertaker's dom was the telephone operator for the town and kept redirecting calls to her sub instead of the other undertaker, and the other undertaker got annoyed and automated telephone operators out of a job.

That's adorable.

Yep. And it required undertakers. And spite.

We have no undertakers but spite is not unheard of.
