“...since you arrived, then.”

“I — would like to make it easier for you, at least.”

"People have been kind, my lord. I -- chose to be alone."

“...mortality can be cruel. I would like to take your family here, for you — or for themselves, if you would still choose solitude.”

"No! No murdering my family!"

“I won’t murder them, child, there are other ways.”

"Other ways of causing them to be dead."

"Ways to bring them here alive."

"What difference would that possibly make?"

"...I understand that the mortal world is different, but – how will it be better for them to live out their lives in pain than in peace?"

"They're perfectly capable of making their own way here if and when they choose."

"...yes, I can understand that."

"I can take you to see them, at least."

"...you can, my lord?"

"It is...not something I do lightly, or often. But there are stories of wandering spirits, aren't there? Sometimes even solid enough to touch."

There's nothing in the world she wants more.

"--why not often, my lord? There's -- people who need it more than I do -- mothers lose their children every day, and children lose their mothers..."

"It requires – leaving the gate open, so to speak, until I am there to lock it again. But there aren't many souls inclined to run, and Aton can track them down easily enough."

"My lord, where's Aton?"

"Doing his work. There is, unfortunately, a war on."

"Then perhaps we shouldn't make more for him."

“A stray soul or two won’t make a difference to him. I’ve watched him work enough.”

He peers at her.

“You’re much more hesitant than I thought you’d be, considering.”

"...I'm sorry, my lord. It's just .. a lot, all at once."

Aton? she prays, silently. My lord? I'm sorry -- I'm sorry, I'm afraid, can you -- please -- send me a sign, if you're there, if you're all right...?

(Aton starves and withers first, in most...)

He nods.

"...It's been some time, since you've had anything at all."

He stands, lifting her off the ground, and begins to walk.

(Nothing else has happened.)

"I missed you, my lord," she says, her mind less than half on the conversation.

In her heart, she's sending up private, desperate prayers to the Wright: sir, please, the one god is here without the other and he's -- acting strange -- I don't like it and I'm afraid and, probably I'm being stupid, but -- not for my sake but for Aton's, please, is he safe, is he all right...

"...and I you. Every moment."

(Nothing.)

"It took me too long to come."

(Still nothing.)

"I'm just glad you did, my lord."

...my lord the moon. You answered me once. Please. I'm not asking anything else, only -- is this the future you saw, is Aton gone, the god who is here with me is wrong and I'm afraid and you, you know all things...
