For just a moment, she’s trying to push Dhayos away, sobbing in her sleep.

Then her eyes open and she’s clinging to Dhayos instead, still crying.

She pulls Kamila close to her chest, sword half-drawn, until the ripple in the air disappears.

Then she turns around.

Three of you, and not one of you could keep her awake.”

“It’s my own fault, my lady,” she murmurs, rubbing her eyes with her knuckles and trying hard to make it look more like sleepiness than tears. “I knew better, I was just careless.”

"...you'll stay with me until you break the habit," she says, apparently not anticipating any argument from the other gods.

"Yes, my lady."

"...you're not in trouble, girl. You just need rest."

It's her turn to relax.

"Thank you, my lady."

She looks up at the spot where the air was shaking in front of her.

"This one is determined. Stupid, but determined."

"It's ... real? Not just..."

“Real enough to kill, when you’re prepared for it.”

"...when I'm...?"

(With cautious hope.)

"It's not a behemoth or a leviathan. Or – a shapeshifter, whatever those are. If you can kill it I'm not going to take that from you."

"...I can learn to kill them."

"Yes, you can."

"...you'll teach me?"

"If you can keep up. I'm not a forgiving teacher."

"Thank you, my lady."

“I told you.”

“Are you going to ask me for time to rest, or will we start tomorrow?”

"I think I've done enough waiting for a lifetime."

"Then I'll wake you at dawn."

"Not if I wake you first, my lady."

"That would be difficult. I don't sleep often."

"--wait, then why is it dark at night?"
