On Moonday the Constitutional Convention voted to Abolish the Enslavement of Slips. This was Good. The Righteous Gods teach that slavery is a Great Evil, even if the Slave is a Slip, unless the master is Far Kinder to their slaves than nearly Any Mortal is capable of, for there is much conduct that is Normal towards a Slave but still Greatly Evil.
On Toilday the Constitutional Convention voted to Close a Portal to Hell and Prohibit the Murder of Dryads. This was Good. I Hope I do not need to explain why Portals to Hell and Murder are Evil.
Today the Very Same Convention voted to Restore the practice of Torture and Feeding Prisoners to Wild Beasts. This was Evil. Righteous Iomedae teaches that Torture is Evil and Unnecessary, Righteous Shelyn teaches that Torture should be used only if it will compel the one being Tortured to Repent of their Evils and not otherwise, and Righteous Erastil teaches that Disputes should be settled Within a Community and no man should Resort to a Trained Torturer who is Not Involved.
I have heard many people ask: Why does the convention do Great Good on Moonday and Toilday, and Great Evil today? Is it not the Same Convention? Have they Forgotten Overnight how to be Good?
In Truth the answer is Far Simpler. For even in Lands recently ruled by Hell many men find it easy to do Good and Refrain from Evil if it does not Injure their Interests in any way. A man who does not own Slips is not Injured by Slips being Free; a man who is not of Hell is not Injured by the Closing of a Portal to Hell; a man who does not wish to Murder Dryads is not Injured by their Murder being Outlawed. But many men Profit by the Legalization of Torture, for it brings them great Joy to see men thrown to the Wild Beasts, or to see the Pain of Criminals. And so they vote to Impose Torture, even though this is a Great Evil.
How, then, can the Convention be influenced towards Goodness? The answer is Very Simple. The Delegates must be Induced to pass laws only in the case where Goodness is not Injurious to them, and not in cases where many Delegates may Profit from Evil. If you Speak with a Delegate, you ought suggest only those Laws where the Convention shall not Profit from Evil; and if by a Suggested Law the Convention may Profit from Goodness, even better. In this manner the Convention shall Refrain from suggesting Evil Laws.
