hey Laia, is the Temple of Shelyn a good place to teach people to fight?

By the time they get to the morning break, Victòria is still pretty upset about the conversation she overheard after the executions vote, but she doesn't manage to get a good look at the men's faces before they leave the room. And — she could run out into the lobby, try and guess from people's clothes and hairstyles which two men it was — it's awfully tempting to try and guess, it's not okay for people to get away with the sort of thing they were talking about — and if she guesses and gets it wrong she'll have hurt an innocent person for no reason, and that's not okay either.

She closes her eyes for a moment and tries to remember what she'd been thinking about before that. —Right. She'd been planning to talk to Laia. It's even sort of relevant, if you stretch it a little.

Laia is still in the religious delegates seating area. Victòria walks over to her.

"Hi, uh, I had a question, is now a good time? —Not about the convention, a different question."

"Sure, what's up?"

"So I was talking with Alicia the other day — uh, you know Alicia, right? She's also a Shelynite."

"Our lay priestess, yes, I've met her."

Victòria is still not entirely sure what makes Alicia different from a regular priestess, but she's pretty sure there's only one Alicia at the convention who's a priestess of Shelyn.

"Anyways, I was talking with her a few days ago, and she suggested I could see about teaching self-defense classes for girls in Westcrown, like we were talking about last night. Only I asked around to see about renting out a space, and turns out it's pretty expensive. But I was thinking, there's a lot of space in the temple of Shelyn — do you think it would work to teach a girls' self-defense class there? —I know it's not really what Shelyn is about, but..."

"Hm. It's not what She's about, no. I don't think she'd necessarily be opposed, in principle, but we're already organizing quite a lot of classes and trying to squeeze in more, all kinds of art and music and so on at lots of times so more people can make it to something - people really need safe harmless things to do so they can meet people and make friends. You could try the Irorites? They have an all-girls' abbey, and I think it might suit them."

The only Irorite Victòria has met is Delegate Iroria, but maybe there's some other Irorite who didn't used to be an assassin murdering innocent people?

"Do you know who runs the abbey?"

"It's Delegate Iroria, she's on Virtuous Churches with me."

"She told the Diabolism Committee that she used to be an assassin."

...Victòria is pretty sure Laia won't find it very convincing if Victòria points out that people who murder innocent people deserve to die for it, but it's not like that's even the only reason it'd be a bad idea to teach a self-defense class there—

"I wouldn't want someone taking what they learned in self-defense lessons and using it to go hurt innocent people — and I know you can't ever be sure of what someone will do with it, but it seems like... people who used to be assassins... are way more likely to do that than random people who came to learn how to protect themselves."

"That's... uh... if...

"Do you think you know more about how to fight than Delegate Iroria does? Because I would guess the opposite so you wouldn't need to worry about teaching her anything."

"...I guess probably not. But I don't really know how teaching people to be assassins works, it might be that there's some specific technique I know of and she doesn't."

"I... personally would not worry about this at all... but if it really bothers you I guess asking to use her abbey would not work well. Why don't the Calistrians have your own church?"

"Raimon went and asked whoever it is in the government that handles giving churches buildings and they said he'd need to pay full price for it, they won't just let him have one for free like they did with some of the other churches. I don't really know why, maybe because Calistria's Chaotic and government people are mostly Lawful? —I guess I could ask Raimon if he knows of a good place to teach self-defense classes, if the Temple of Shelyn won't work."

"Well, I wish you luck. ...you could try the big Abadaran temple, they have a lot of space empty on days when the Arch-healer isn't in town, but probably only if you were going to charge and give them some of the money, which I'm betting you don't want to do."

"Right, I don't only want rich girls to be able to defend themselves. Thanks anyways."

Can she find Raimon?

Yeah, he's over here making faces behind the backs of a couple Erastilians who are talking about whether they should matchmake the one's son with the other's daughter.

Wave wave. "Hey Raimon! I had a question, do you have a couple minutes?"

"Sure, what's up?"

"So I used to teach self-defense lessons to the girls back home, and a few days back Alicia suggested I could do something like that here in Westcrown too. Only when I went to see about renting out a lesson space, they were all pretty expensive. I was wondering if you had any ideas for good spaces for that that wouldn't be too expensive? I asked Laia, from the Temple of Shelyn, but she says they're too busy with art classes to have space there."

"What do you need the space to be like, and what time of day do you think you'd do it?"

"Ideally it should have a nice big open room, so everyone can spread out and you don't have people running into each other, with the sort of floor you won't slip around on too much. I was thinking I'd run them in the evenings — not right after the convention gets out, lots of the time I'm busy right after, but before sunset so it's not too dark, it's not really safe to have people practice if you're lighting the whole room with candles. —If you wanted to help out with healing in case someone gets hurt, that would be really great, but no worries if you'd rather not, I can prepare healing spells or see if Alicia can help or something."

"I think there's too much furniture in the Fig and Honey's big room, it's all couches and divans and shit... does it have to be a room or could you do it in a park?"

"A park could maybe work, as long as no one decides to make trouble about it and the weather stays decent — how often does it rain like it did last week here?"

"Basically never, that was the archmages playing with the weather."

"Oh. Huh. A park'd probably be fine then, do you have a park you recommend?"

"Maybe - well, I don't know what they're calling it now, it used to be Puragaus. You go west on - uh -

"- I'll just walk you there after the convention."
