"I was worried but that's because you guys haven't invented medicine yet."

He looks at his list.

- everyone except Karen is suffering short-term memory loss

- Karen hit her head while doing the spell to seal Melkor away

- this was discussed in advance

confusions:

- how did Karen hit her head?

- why Karen had the baby

- why Karen isn't married to the father of the baby

- why Wishbone was in the room while Karen gave birth - he was scared

- why I had a sword.

"There's a spell to seal Melkor away?"

"Yes. Just did it. - I think my main problem, other than the fact that everyone around me is forgetting this every five seconds, is that I don't actually know whether the spell worked. I do know that I cast it."

He adds to his list.

" - so we need... we need to figure out if the spell worked. I think - I think the spell gave us memory loss."

"This seems very likely. Oh, uh, I asked Wishbone earlier whether he remembered what happened to the last god he wanted to kill, and he said he didn't, and I didn't think much of it at the time but I guess - it would make sense if the spell also gives people memory loss."

He's frowning at his list. "Are these confusions important? Do they look important to you?"

"Yes? Some of them? - I think it's pretty important that you don't remember anything about the spell to seal Melkor away, I think that is definitely in the category of things that are important."

"This is longer than your list is supposed to be when you're dealing with short-term memory loss. What are the five most important - there's a spell that seals Melkor away?"

" - OK. Five important facts, or five important confusions?"

"Facts -"

"Ok. The five most important facts are, uh, - everyone except I guess me is experiencing short-term memory loss, I hit my head while doing the spell to seal Melkor away, I had a baby because it was necessary for the spell to seal Melkor away, we have already done the spell to seal Melkor away, and now we need to figure out whether the spell was successful. I don't know whether putting 'spell to seal Melkor away' on your sheet that many times will be helpful or if it'll just be counterproductive."

"I need playing dice, the bone ones, where're those?"

- everyone except Karen is experiencing short-term memory loss

- Karen hit her head while doing a spell to seal Melkor away

- Karen had a baby because it was necessary for the spell to seal Melkor away

- we have already done the spell

- we need to figure out of the spell worked

"...do you suppose that the spell caused the short-term memory loss?"

"Yes. We think that's likely. Maybe you can add 'probably from the spell'. We discussed this but you forgot."

- everyone except Karen is experiencing short-term memory loss, probably from the spell

- Karen hit her head while doing a spell to seal Melkor away

- Karen had a baby because it was necessary for the spell to seal Melkor away

- we have already done the spell

- we need to figure out of the spell worked

"Okay," he says. "You know what I need, I need the bone playing dice, do you know where those are?"

"Bone playing dice?"

"Yeah. Uh, any source of randomization, so I don't keep reacting the same way to the same inputs."

"Oh, OK, yeah. Uh - the desk, I think, maybe under some papers."

He pulls them out. He rolls them. He studies his sheet. "Okay. What does sealing a god do? Wishbone?"

Uh, depends on the specific situation. Typically that means that the god is reduced to a dormant or powerless form, usually inside some particular place or object. Why?

- sealed typically means a god is reduced to a dormant or powerless form

"I'm trying to figure out how someone would be able to tell if they had just completed a ritual to seal a god."

Hm. Details depend on the specific ritual, but in general, is the god still around doing god things? Because if it is, then it's definitely not sealed.

- if the god is still doing god things, then it's not sealed

"Is there a spell that can tell if a god is sealed?"

Not an all-purpose one. There can't be a single spell to tell you whether a god is in a sealed state, because 'sealed' is just a word used to describe a whole bunch of different states that look kind of similar.

- no single spell to check if a god is sealed

"Can we check for all of them one at a time?"

I don't know the specifics of everything that might be described as sealing. Even if I did, I wouldn't know all of the spells off the top of my head.
