Well, realistically, Varan's been taking insane risks for a long time now. Being eaten by some kind of monster on the road isn't really surprising.
Surviving it is!
[A lot of technological stuff runs on electricity. The same thing as lightning, but less of it. You can generate it by moving magnets and copper wire in relation to each other, most traditionally by heating up water and letting the steam pressure do the work of moving the things, lots of that going on in one place where that's the whole point of the facility. Then the electricity can be conducted along more wires to get wherever it's going, and power a light, or a stove, or something.]
[It is! Uh, don't stick anything such as your fingers in an electrical outlet - that'll be two side by side holes with or without an additional hole below them, usually set into the wall, often in pairs.]
[There's lots of nonmagical medicine and surgery, and mages if you shell out.]
[Not usually, just... if you ever need that, it’s available, and the price for it can take advantage of the fact that the gods can plan on very long time scales. And it helps people sponsored by gods operate in places that aren’t good for growing anything - like along the Worldwound border.]
[Right, but, like, go on a bit, what can you tell me about demons and what's being done about the place.]
[They’ve been stripped of all their impulses to be gentle or generous, or to be trustworthy. They eat people, they poison rivers, they destroy art. They trick people into having sex with them - or mind-control people into having sex with them - and take advantage of them letting their guard down. Or they just show up and attack, there are different kinds. People from all over teleport up and hold the border for a while, it's a good place to practice fighting if you're strong enough, and I guess the situation can't be too bad because it's been open for a hundred years and I never ran into a demon in Absalom. As far as I know, anyway.]
[I thought you might be a good person - I mean, you wouldn't have the concept, if you don't have magic for seeing it or know about afterlife sorting, but there's a way people can be where they give other people things, don't do anything to help themselves if that would get in anyone else's way, and like art and animals and... I don't know, they think everyone should be a beautiful songbird for Shelyn to enjoy or something. They do also, like, light people's houses on fire. And people. And things that aren't people or houses.]
[...on this planet we do not think of "art-loving arsonist into self-abnegation" as a natural category and definitely don't call that category that we don't have "good person".]
[I mean the demons do also light things on fire. Probably good people also do that but only to evil people and their stuff, whereas I think demons light everyone's stuff on fire equally.]
[The goddess of doing it has a sword for her symbol but the sword is kind of on fire. Or maybe that's the sun, for killing vampires? I don’t know. I assume they mostly use swords if they're not wizards.]
[Vampires! Wow! We have those as a fictional concept and also a kind of bat but not as real guys.]
[They're undead, like ghouls, and undead are all evil in the sense that paladins are supposed to kill them all and also in the sense that a lot of kinds eat people but mostly in that good people believe the good afterlives are rewards and the evil afterlives are punishments so if you’re afraid of your afterlife it must be because you’re evil - I'm pretty sure that's not true, by the way. But I think it's what paladins say.]
