Well, realistically, Varan's been taking insane risks for a long time now. Being eaten by some kind of monster on the road isn't really surprising.
Surviving it is!
[I can think about it. I don't really think I can make it work, though, especially if there's nothing to do.]
[I contemplate magic and improve my powers? Or learn a new language or something.]
[So while you’re contemplating magic and improving your powers, do you... like... save people from landslides? Do those happen here?]
[Landslides exist. I work eclipses - sometimes people can't fast for medical reasons or they fail at it for being twelve reasons, and they eclipse with uncontrolled powers, and precogs all work eclipses so we can see it coming when there's going to be a disaster and get word to someone who can prevent it before it happens. And my precog range improves when I use it, but not more when I use it about disasters than when I use it during my day job.]
[......why? Oh, also, do you want dessert, I'm getting tiramisu but it's got booze and caffeine in it and I don't know where you're at in your sleep cycle or alcohol tolerance.]
[Maybe I could try a different dessert that doesn't have booze in it? I mostly can't sleep in after the sun comes up in places where there's sunlight.]
[Sure, there's gelato - it's a kind of ice cream - and there's panna cotta, a sort of pudding.]
Tiramisu omnomnom. [Oh good. What do you need... besides monsters to fight or possibly a way to work eclipses that works for non-eclipsed... to try to work out more spells?]
[I guess people need spellbooks and I don't have that, but I think you need fancy ink and paper and I don't know how to tell if they're fancy enough or the right kind of fancy.]
[Okay, you think on that and if you can't come up with any clues in the next few days, I'll start looking into diviners.]
[My apartment's six more subway stops. I have a foldout couch you can sleep on but if you'd rather, I can get you a hotel, it's just you won't be able to talk to the staff if anything comes up.]
[I don't especially have a preference? Whatever is convenient for you. Uh, actually, I have a question. I've been to... different places... and in some of them people show affection more physically than others and I've been erring on the side of not touching anyone at all but I'm just wondering if you could give me some tips about manners here?]
[That is a good default, though it's okay if you are in a very crowded situation and bump into people, that happens on the subway or the sidewalk sometimes and it's normal for it to happen and get basically brushed off as long as you're making it clear you're doing your best to give everybody personal space. Some people do handshakes when being introduced to new people, it'd be marked to decline one. Very occasionally you might run into a hugger and it is not marked to turn those down. People wind up falling into different levels of casual touch with their friends and other different usually touchier equilibria with their partners, there's not amazing general guidelines to be had there besides to escalate slowly if you're not sure. I am not myself a very touchy person.]
