The portalsnake doesn't keep Azan from winning its war.
They take prisoners. One of them is not going to catch Maki's eye.
This is not what he was expecting from Azan he, but it's not bad. "Aw, now I'll have to find some other hobby."
"I thought you said you weren't doing that in the first place?" Azan he asks with mock suspicion.
"Well, of course, but it's always fun to try new things and I'm bored of eating babies..."
Azan he laughs again. "Make sure Vida gives you some money to start out with."
"Money, currency, coin, dough, wages?"
"I know the concept - not all those words for it, though - I just don't know if you mean a gift or a loan or how much you mean or... why."
"I'm certainly not going to let you starve on the street just because Vida likes you."
"...You think differently from people in Sesat."
"If you make her pay me in cash, I can run away and go somewhere else."
"If you feel the need to do that, Vida probably wasn't treating you very well and I couldn't possibly blame you."
"And that's how you're different."
"If you are planning to run away, give someone a heads-up so Vida doesn't just think she's lost you in the clutter forever."
Vida throws her arms around Valan and squeezes tight. "Let's get you set up with somewhere to stay!"
Then they can do that.
Some time after Maki and Iri get back to the city, Dama goes to find them.
Iri isn't particularly afraid of Dama anymore. They greet her in Azani.
She grins back at Iri. "Hi! My king wants to see you, is now a good time?"
"It is for me."
Good, good. Azan he wants to talk to them about offering Iri a job.
Iri would love a job. What kind of job?
Can Iri use their powers to keep an eye on Iral and let him know about any offensive moves in advance, as an ongoing paid position?
"Sort of. I can't watch all the time, I have to sleep and look where I'm flying. And I can't watch every part of Iral at once."
