"Did you ever seek them out? Some places have worse locals, but nowhere is so bad that I'd rather be an omega." 

"Not really. What's so bad about being an omega—I assume that's someone without a pack?"

"The lack of control, the weakness, the loneliness...it doesn't have much going for it." 

"I didn't really have anyone to compare with, as far as weakness goes," he points out, "and never was really lonely. The lack of control... yeah."

"I'm getting distracted. We should talk about Beacon Hills. Recently, there was a murder. A girl, cut in half. I came here looking for the person that did it. The Argent family arrived in town the day after."

"Holy shit. Was it a werewolf?"

"I'm not sure. I've seen what these hunters can do, and it's not pretty. But there's an alpha, and it's only a matter of time before he starts targeting people, if he attacked a kid in the woods."

He nods, glumly. "Okay, now, um... What exactly is an alpha? Or a beta?"

"An alpha is the leader of a pack. They gain power from having betas, especially wiling ones. An alpha can call her betas to her side, and can take their pain. Betas are all other wolves, besides alphas and omegas. Omegas are wolves that don't have packs."

"How do you join a pack? Or become an alpha?"

"I was born in my pack, and born with an alpha. My sister became alpha after our mother died. She passed it on with her death. Humans can only be turned by alphas, so all turned wolves like you have one."

"—I'm very sorry for your losses," he says, sounding like he means it.

"Any more questions?" 

"Is it possible at all to join a pack, or am I doomed to omegadom forever? And how permanent is this decision, if so?"

"You have to acknowledge the alpha to be part of their pack. If you decide you don't respect them anymore, you can leave." 

"Oh. So isn't Scott an omega, too, now?"

"Maybe. Rejecting the alpha who turned you is different than rejecting another one, and it's harder, if they come calling. But he hasn't gone to him yet." 

"You have to meet your alpha to reject them?"

"If an alpha rejects their beta, they become an omega. If a beta rejects an alpha, they become an omega. If you never meet your alpha, one of you is doing the rejecting." 

"And... you're an alpha now?"

"I don't think I can help you." 

"—I didn't mean that as 'can I join your pack' I do not know you nearly well enough for that, it was just general curiosity."

"I don't think I can tell you anything else you don't know about alphas." 

"Okay. So... do you want help?"

"Look, you can stay here, but I don't need a third werewolf on my plate right now. Alpha, beta, omega..."
