The town of Leopard Hill stands with its gates open and its guards ready to close them if anything happens, which it probably won't. Sesat might be at war but this town is far from Azan. With all that territory in the way it's probably safe to go run errands outside of town. Right?
It’s safe, yes, but the road is not in fact clear of Azani.
“Excuse me, sir, do you happen to know where I can find someone with knowledge of local medicinal plants?”
Teru looks around. Nope, there aren't any men. So as long as she's got this dangerous foreigner fooled she'll just roll with that. She glares. "What in the space between the stars is an Azani doing here?"
“Looking for medical supplies. I don’t mean you any harm, I just would prefer to have a local source.”
"Don't mean me any harm? Ha! I'll allow you to quietly turn yourself in in town if you'd prefer not to be beaten to death right now."
“...So given that that’s a terrible idea and I’m not going to do that, would you like to tell me what an untrained Sesati girl like yourself is planning to do about it?”
She’s guessing, of course, but all the Sesati soldiers she’s seen so far have been men. She’s got pretty good odds.
Throw her herbs aside and attack, it turns out. She definitely has no training but that's not going to stop her from trying.
Cute. Not that it’s going to do her any good, but the fact that she’s trying at all makes her more interesting.
Nadi sidesteps her and catches her by the arm. “I’m not a soldier, and even if I was, you’re still a civilian. You’re not going to beat me, and I’m not going to harm you if I can avoid it.”
"HELP! AN AZANI!"
Smart girl. Still not going to help.
”Two Azani,” she tells the Sesati girl.
Well, however many of them there are, they'll have a harder time of whatever they're doing if Teru just keeps struggling. Even if they can overpower her it means they have to do that instead of anything else.
“The war is over. Sesat belongs to Azan now. You’re as much an Azani as I am.”
She's not falling for it.
There’s nothing to fall for.
“Do you think I couldn’t kill you if I wanted to?”
"I would rather that than let one of your soldiers touch me!"
“Why would they touch you? You’re a civilian. I’m only touching you because you tried to attack me.”
"I don't know what you're talking about!"
“Sesat lost the war. I’m an Azani medic. You’re a former Sesati civilian and now an Azani citizen. No one has any reason to hurt you. Where are you still lost?”
"Well, maybe your women have no honor but I do!"
“Who said anything about honor? What are you talking about?”
"Let go of me, you Azani whore!"
"I said let go of me!"
Nadi does, but doesn’t let her guard down.
Teru takes several steps away from her. She glares murderously.
“What did you call me?”
