Self-inserts and co. on a cruise

The Starline Cruise sends out invitations, through mail or birds or flashes of fire or whatever seems appropriate. The invitations are always magical and often impossible with the world's native magic. The invitations come with whatever you need to get to the cruise's location, train tickets, cash, occasionally a magic teleporting rock.

Your cruise is of varying length, but no matter how long your cruise is, you will always return the day after you arrive.

The ship arrives on water if it can and through the sky, if it can't. It it golden-bronze and feathered and covered in the lights from a thousand windows.

Erin stands in the cruise's aquarium, staring at small, white jellyfish drifting in their tank.

Zir life keeps getting weirder and weirder.

First it was waking up as baby Hermione Granger, with magic and everything - and being a metamorphagus somehow. Alright, bizarre enough.

Then ze got some kind of weird, blatantly magical invitation to 'Starline Cruise.' Alright, ze's Hermione, even if it's at least five or so years before ze should get zir Hogwarts letter -

Except this was an anachronistic high-tech kind of magical.

Convincing zir parents (well, Hermione's parents) to let zem get on the cruise alone was a bit of a chore, but ze did at least manage that, so magical possibly time traveling alien cruise ahoy?

(Ze also aged back up to zir mid-twenties when ze entered, though ze's still in Hermione-slash-Emma Watson's body by default. A quick test confirms ze still has zir shapeshifting, then ze gets zir bags put away and commences wandering.)

The aquarium sounds fun, and seems minimally inhabited, at least.

Erin glances over and smiles briefly while trying not to make eye contact and then resumes looking at the jellyfish.

Ze hasn't met anyone else yet on the ship, and she doesn't look super eager-to-talk but ze's also not sure on that? And kind of would like to know what's going on.

"Hey!" ze says in a friendly tone. "Uh. Been here long? I just got on..."

She smiles, still not quite making eye contact.

"Hi. Uh, not long. I just got on this morning."

Does person not want to talk? How does this 'social interaction when not a precocious child' thing even work?!?!

"Oh. Uh. I don't really know how this whole cruise thing works? Are you from Earth too? - Well, Earth summer of nineteen-eighty-seven, possessing of secret possibly randomly applied magic? Or, uh, like, feel free to tell me to buzz off, I can probably track down a staff member and like a welcome packet..."

"Yeah, I'm from Earth, 2018. I'm not magic really, but I uh, think I made this cruise? Maybe?"

Oh good maybe wants to talk.

"Oh! Huh. How? Oh also I used to be from an Earth that probably didn't have magic but it was like at least 2022 though I don't really remember any specifics that happened after 2018 which is kind of weird but not that much for me, my memory's bad, did you have the Harry Potter books? Because I woke up in them. Oh wait was that too many questions, uh..."

She smiles, more genuinely.

"I wrote the cruise and now it's real. Apparently. Maybe I just knew it existed somehow. We have the Harry Potter books."

"That's cool! I'm currently inhabiting the body of Hermione Granger - wow that sounds creepy - though I used to be named Chrysanthos. Or just Chris."

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Erin. I was wondering if you were Emma Watson."

"Apparently just Hermione as played by Emma! If you made this world - or at least wrote it - have you met any of your characters yet? That'd be kind of neat, though I'd probably have to spend a couple hours apologizing if I met any of mine, I tend to be a bit mean to them. Or a lot."

"I haven't. Uh, I might have a lot of apologizing to do too. Maybe I'll just go with the theory where I was magically seeing into other universes somehow and not creating people who are suffering."

"That's more reassuring, though it doesn't mesh well with my creative process. Uh, what kinds of things do you write?"

"I uh, do a lot of collaborative writing, mostly sci-fi and fantasy, and some individual stuff."

"Neat. That sort of thing's fun, and group writing's easier - I'm perennially incapable of finishing solo projects. Farthest I ever got and admit to having written is this one scifi-fantasy novel I did for nano." Then, jokingly: "That epic-length Naruto fanfic I wrote in middle school definitely doesn't exist, nope, no way."

"So, like, RPs or co-authored novels? I think co-authoring a novel would be hard, that's so not my skillset, but RPing mostly is. There is a tragic lack of RP communities accessible to people who look seven in the 1980s, I can't even find a good dungeons and dragons group where I live."

"It's RP sort of, it's a little more formal than most RP I guess. Maybe you can do some DnD while you're here. If this is the cruise I created, it definitely has roleplaying groups."

Ahhhhh is ze talking too much? Ze's probably talking too much?

Okay Chris, get it together and don't babble here...

"That'd be nice! We could make a 'horribly sorry writers who swear to be more ethical from now on' group. That might not catch on, though. I can probably commit to happy endings in which the glorious transhumanist future arrives and the world gets hooked up to an interdimensional ever-expanding paradise?"

"Oh wait hey if this is an interdimensional cruise where people can randomly meet and things we write are real, I am now seriously tempted to run around opening every single door in case Milliways exists - Milliways is uh high context but is an interdimensional bar good for exploiting resources?"

"Wait, Milliways? I know Milliways. Though I guess if it's real it might pop up in a lot of places. Where'd you hear about it?"

"Online RP community called glowfic, I think it existed pre-glowfic but I wasn't in that one."

"Wait, glowfic?"

She suddenly looks very excited.

"I'm ErinFlight? Who are you?"

"ChaosMagic! Can I hug you, I want to hug you - "

"Yeah," Erin leans forward and hugs zem.

"This definitely isn't a coincidence."

Hugging!

"What, like, we're characters and this was arranged? - I definitely owe an apology to every character I have ever written, holy shit my main universe better not be a thread, I am really mean to characters."

"The implications of what we write being real is really alarming."
