...Nothing comes to mind?  It's not exactly my field of study; you've probably got as much information already downloaded as I could round up on short notice.

Yes ma'am. I'll ask master Deskyl if there are any precautions she'd like me to take next time she's awake.

That also seems like a good idea - and, for that matter, she probably has advice on - the general issue of how to find out what you want, albeit from a more human-typical perspective.  Like, that is kind of the bread and butter of Sith...ing..., isn't it?  Though I would guess she's probably already tried...

...Though, given the circumstances, maybe not, I don't know how much time you've had where she wasn't - well.  Otherwise occupied.

Relatively little, yes ma'am. I'll ask her if she has any other advice.

Might be worthwhile.  Best of luck to you.  ...I have never had this particular problem myself, but, having had decision paralysis for other reasons aplenty, you have my sympathies, if you want them.  (Also my utter rage at your creators for subjecting your self-modelling to this because that's just - stupid of them, I think - but I don't know if you'd want that any more than you'd want my sympathies.)

She doesn't understand why Alicia feels that way, but it doesn't seem productive to ask. It's not like she objects, anyway; people can feel however they'd like.

Thank you, ma'am.

...She doesn't quite know what to say to that.

...I just hope I've helped somehow.

I expect so, yes ma'am. I'll let you know what happens with the spirit consultation idea.

...I hope it goes well.

And after that, there's really nothing more she has to say.

DZ experiments with the magic a little more - keeping the possibility of teleportation in mind does give her a modest boost in power, to her surprise - before judging that it's late enough in the morning to visit the library and then the duchess.

Is there something she's looking for in particular, in the library?

The rest of the books on local technology, yes, and then she'll pick up some more poetry as well.

There's a few of those.  This particular library isn't really a big library, just a discerningly well-stocked one for its size.

...Perhaps, given DZ's nontechnical browsing habits, she could provide some books of poetry to her guests as a token of thanks.  In addition to the pay they should receive for their work.

With the books scanned, DZ makes her way to the duchess's office and lets the secretary know that she's expected.

In she goes. "Good morning, Your Grace."

"Good morning, DZ.  Please feel free to have a seat if you wish."  She seems to be willing to wait for DZ to speak first, though she remembers the topic of discussion.

She sits. (Not that she'd mind standing; the mechanical charger works fine and she doesn't need to worry about conserving power. But she understands an indirect expression of preference when she hears one.) And after a beat, she does speak: "I believe you might benefit from me explaining what droids are and how we work before we start, ma'am, if Her Highness hasn't explained it to your satisfaction?"

(Interesting, that she did sit.  She wonders why.)

"Her Highness has said quite a bit, but I have always believed in consulting primary sources."

"Yes ma'am. The primary thing you should understand is that droids are designed and made, like any other tool, to be useful to people - the people of master Deskyl's world also noticed that some kinds of labor were bad for the people who were being made to do them, and created droids as a solution to that problem. And because of that, we're much more suited to those kinds of work - I'm genuinely not harmed or made uncomfortable in any way by treating humans deferentially, or being assigned tasks without consideration for my preferences, or anything else of that nature."

"...Hm.  I would rather dispute that last example, by the very nature of the words involved.  It is rather my estimation that separating you from Deskyl, for example, would do harm, and not just to her - even if all your duties were seamlessly undertaken by an indistinguishable replacement."

"My line is made with a significant degree of personal loyalty, yes ma'am, but there's a procedure for adjusting who we're loyal to; if you were to follow that procedure a change in owner wouldn't bother me at all."
