Teal Curve Public Library is becoming very slowly better organized and better curated. They always have more book donations than space; they've adopted the policy that if you add ten cubic feet to the library you can also choose one book to add to the shelves. The library is growing enough to fit its collection, now, which helps a little, but it's still a mess of poorly written books that don't actually appeal to the general interest. But such are public libraries. Derri has been organizing books by whether other libraries accept them and if so which ones. Sometimes a book has been accepted by multiple other libraries and then she sticks it in whichever section has the most room. The bookcases full of books not accepted at any more selective libraries are more crowded. Right now she's got a new bookcase in the new space at the edge of the demiplane and a box of books from the basement to organize, though of course the majority of them are going right onto this shelf of books people mostly read out of charity.

So there's a library surrounded by what seems like a slightly luminous teal bubble and dotted with round teal tables and chairs for reading, with no windows anywhere to be seen and a swirling vortex off in the distance, and a young woman with black hair shelving books.

There appears a young woman with pink hair and her pants around her ankles and red pressure marks on her wrists who staggers, trips due to the pants situations, and falls down with a shriek.

"I'm concerned for your welfare and wasn't expecting you but emergency services is two hops away through the Teal Curve hub!"

She pulls up her pants and babbles something in Foreign!

Derri laces her words with power. They will be heard. They will be understood. They cannot be ignored. (This is normally very rude, but not in disasters with loud background noise or language barriers.) "I don't know how you got here and I'm torn between trying to be reassuring and trying to learn what language that is, because I don't recognize it. Emergency services for Teal Curve, our town, is two hops away, through the hub. I wasn't expecting you and I'm concerned for your welfare."

This is oddly resonant and comes from inside as well as outside of Peka's head.

"AUGH??"

"I think you might be more confused than I expect from unexpected visitors. It looks like something bad was happening to you. You haven't said anything I can understand. I'm wondering if you're new, or so out of power that you can't make me understand. You can nod your head like this for yes or shake it like this for no. Can you make me understand what you're trying to say?"

Headshake??

"Do you know anyone else who speaks a language you know?"

...slooooow nod?

Something might, maybe, possibly, be building when she answers questions, but if so it's very subtle.

"Do you want to go to the disaster station, where we can find people trained to handle crisis situations, immediately?"

She thinks about that for a bit but finally settles on nodding, on the grounds that this person can certainly call the cops on her without permission anyway.

"Okay. I’m going to lead you there. First we go through the portal to the hub." Derri starts walking toward the swirling vortex.

Peka follows her, hands clasped behind her back.

Through the portal there’s a crowded... void? The background is all swirls and curves in various shades of teal and turquoise and aquamarine. People walk into and out of swirling portals with signs in an unfamiliar script. "Does your home town have one of these?" Derri asks, looking back at Peka.

Emphatic headshake!!

Yeah, there’s something happening when she answers questions.

"That surprises me," Derri says, walking confidently toward another portal, "because it seems like a normal part of having a town and I can’t think how else you would connect all the demiplanes. Now I'm wondering if you just have one really big one, or maybe you mean you haven’t actually been to a town before?"

And through the other portal is a lobby with multiple portals and several people in uniform sitting around, some of them behind desks.

She's not sure whether she wants more of that thing to happen, which is convenient because she has no idea how to answer that at all!

"Hi! This person showed up only speaking a foreign language and unable to make herself understood," Derri says.

One of the uniformed people walks over to them. "That’s moderately unusual and concerning. Do you want us to prioritize helping you build magic power with which you could make yourself understood?" he asks Peka.

?????????????????

"Do you have a medical emergency?" asks the uniformed person.

Headshake.

"I'm Lyr. What's your name?"

"Peka Atan."

"Is there anything you'd like my help with?"
