"Why are you sure? The Church cannot even look the problem in the eye because then they would have to make admissions embarrassing in Oppara. The enemy's interfering with their Communes. ...we could start by asking Aroden, 'has the Church already asked all of the useful questions to be asked about how we can best be positioned to win the Crusade' -"

"I have heard it said, you know, that the gods do not answer us costlessly, even aside from the costs of the cinnamon; that when we demand Their attention for our questions, we spend their strength."

Iomedae had not heard that and it has fairly dizzying implications. "Where did you hear it said?"

"One of Aroden's priests. I am not cutting you off from Communes; I know you find inspiration in them, and people are greatly impressed by your sermons, and I recognize the power of the words of the gods, particularly as you report them." She can draw a crowd like no one else on the Crusade. "But I notice you are constitutionally incapable of - treating a matter as outside your remit, for any reason that is not ultimately tactical. Oppara is important, so you must go to Oppara; we rely ultimately on the aid of Aroden, so you must personally ensure that you are satisfied with the method by which He provides it; we are in the hands of the gods, and so you must have reassurance that they employ you only in a fashion you, yourself, approve of. In doing this you impose extraordinary costs on everyone around you. The Church in Oppara is obliged to arrest you lest you ruin everything; Aroden must repeat Himself; if your vision had the true power of a god in it, then it was spent appeasing you instead of telling us how to win the war. This is a vice, it is an error, and if you mean to command men and play games with high stakes you will need to grow out of it."

"Sir. If my questions cost Aroden something, why does He answer them? When I asked for His oath, why'd He give it?"

"Maybe because, if all the things you disdain as merely purchasing time purchase enough of it, if you grow up, you will possess the strength to save the world. Or maybe you had a fit of excited delirium because women really shouldn't wear armor. It is beyond my remit."

"Thank you, sir."

"Do not waste my time like this ever again."

"I won't, sir."
