"I could call some people and try to find out? I'm sure they have a line, uh a way to talk to them, for the public, but I don't know how seriously they'd take you."

"That'd be real nice of you."

"No problem," he says, smiling warmly, "Why don't you come back this evening?"

"Okay, thanks!"

"Father Valentine? One more thing before you go, if you don't mind."

"Oh, sure, what is it?"

The Master looks pained.

"I-," he pauses, sighs, "I feel bad saying this, but I think it would be worse not to. I think Anthony might have had an, ah, problem, with my being an alien."

He looks taken aback.

"Anthony? That's- Are you sure? He's not the best with people sometimes..."

"It's easy to read into these things," The Master says, "It could just be in my head. But I thought I should bring it to your attention, so you could keep an eye out."

"No, I am glad you mentioned. I'm just surprised. What exactly happened?"

"Nothing it's easy to name. But, as soon as he learned I wasn't human he started looking for excuses to get us out. And he seemed to take an instant dislike to me, after just a few sentences. I know the aliens that look human can be more disturbing to humans sometimes. I probably should have led with it..."

"Right," he says, "I apologize. I'll talk to him. Even if you can't join, everyone should be welcome here."

And then they can leave.

Once they're in the elevator, the Master starts grinning.

"What?"

"Unless our dear friend Anthony is a much better diplomat than he seems, he won't be working in this city much longer."

"Oh. Was that a good idea?"

"Oh, he'll be fine. It's not like religions fire people, they'll just move him somewhere less exciting. And he was an asshole. He had it coming."

"Okay. ...religions can fire people, it's called excommunication."

"Oh, really? You learn new things every day. Well, if they fire him over a random stranger's words they're being idiots. So if he does get fired he probably also had that coming."

"Yeah, I don't think they're gonna, just they can."

"That opens up exciting new possibilities for any future annoying priests I meet."

"...don't actually get people excommuncated!"

"Sure," he says, not in a way that inspires confidence.

The TARDIS is waiting for them nearby.

In she goes.
