Beka is confused, but hey, the last time she walked into a confusing anomaly it worked out great, and this one looks friendly enough too.
"It's okay." It reminded her that she didn't want too much information but it wasn't actually too much information in itself.
"Anyway one day I had got ahold of my baby so I could try a dumb thing to escape, and then a monster with a portal for a face showed up and ate some orcs, and I jumped in 'cause why not, and I landed in Serik's palace. The orcs weren't there though, I don't know where they wound up."
Somewhere better than they had been, so why worry about it?
"I dunno, they might've landed somewhere where they just died."
Okay yes that sounds bad.
"Maybe one day Serik can go looking for their souls and put them back."
Their what now?
"Souls. Elves and orcs have 'em so I probably do too. I think humans maybe don't. But with us if our body's dead you can just put the soul in a new one and it's fine. Well, not you, probably, but there's one of the Elf gods who can, and he won't do orcs, but Serik might be able to and he will do orcs if he does anybody."
Humans definitely don't have anything like that, Mom was dead for ten years and doesn't remember anything from that time.
"That kinda sucks. I guess it means no gods can torture you forever after you die though."
That definitely doesn't happen???
"Oh, uh, orcs believe that when they die the Elf gods will torture them forever. I don't know if I count but I am probably more like an orc than an elf there. My plan is to not wander over anywhere near any Elf gods if I die, and hang around waiting for Serik to figure something out, instead, and I tell my baby that too."
Yeah, Sekar is her plan if she dies too. But she doesn't have the option of wandering away, which is apparently better than not??? What even are these Elf God things.
"They're called the Valar, and there's fourteen, and the evil god who ran where I grew up was the same kinda thing. There's also littler ones called Maiar, some of those were evil too."
Well, back home the only person who's powerful and hazardous is the Emperor, and he's only hazardous within constraints most people don't have to worry about.
"Constraints? Serik just grabs random pretty girls to be swans when he needs new ones, I think."
The Emperor buys his slave girls like a normal person. He's also hazardous to people who piss him off enough but the only anecdote Lyrame has about that featured several warnings, so anyone not an idiot is probably fine on that count.
(the "slave girl" concept is accompanied by a brief flash of context for the tattoos on her wrists)
"Those're pretty," comments Beka.
"The tattoos on your wrists."
"It's the Imperial seal." And she's pretty much the only pretty girl with them on her wrists who wouldn't rather be dead, as far as she knows.
"Having them put on was kind of terrifying." She hadn't known her mysterious rich friend had been the Emperor before he told the scribe what to mark her wrists with. And then she had taken a gamble on him still being friendly and it had payed off and everything was fine, now, but it had been extremely scary at the time.
"Oh yeah, that sounds really scary."
He's pretty sure this was the way back to his pile of cuddles from the bathroom. Like, pretty sure.
This ... is not his pile of cuddles.
