let's try this concept again

Beka is confused, but hey, the last time she walked into a confusing anomaly it worked out great, and this one looks friendly enough too.

The door opens behind her, and an unfamiliar voice says, "Oh, excuse me." Bumping into someone from behind is rude. "No, wait, what?" But then again so is replacing someone's bedroom with a magic bar??? Did Sekar do this???

Beka gets out of her way. "Oh, hi. Uh, I think this just kind of happened, I dunno who Sekar is."

"My, uh, boyfriend." Also the Emperor, but that'd just freak her out. "If you don't know who he is how do you know his name?"

"'Cause you thought it."

She can read my mind? What on earth do you have to dedicate at what level to do that? And why didn't she react to the emperor thing, you'd at least expect pity, not that I need it--well, maybe she picked up on the not needing it? What is going on???

"I don't think I know your emperor. I dunno what dedicating is, I can just read minds 'cause I'm an orf."

???The fuck is an orf???

"We're in between Elves and orcs, like, my birth parents were Elves but my mom got tortured a lot while she was pregnant with me, and my baby's an orc. What are you, are you a human like Serik?"

She does not know what an orc or an elf is, and as far as she knew before just now everyone was human.

"Nah, there's other stuff where I'm from. I think where I live now most everybody's human though."

Huh. Neat. Although if everyone's human where she is, why did she specify "like Serik"?

"I haven't met very many humans. I just live with Serik and his daughter Iri. And there's swans but I try not to bother the swans and also they are swans sometimes so I dunno if they're humans too still."

"Oh, uh, there's this magic that runs on torture and needs to be topped up sometimes, so Serik kidnaps some people for that and sometimes they're swans for magic reasons?"

Wow, maybe she wouldn't freak out about the Emperor thing even if she did know his general reputation.

(Bits and pieces of his reputation flash through her mind, including the bit about throwing a guy off the roof, with Sekar's explanation for why appended)

"Yeah the place I'm from is waaaaaaay worse. Serik turned it into a grassy valley with bunnies!"

Yeah she probably doesn't want to know.

"Probably not. So we both have boyfriends who torture people, that's funny, isn't it?"

"I guess."

She should probably be more bothered by it, but Sekar brought her mother back.

"Serik fixed my baby! Orcs are born just kinda in tons of pain all the time and he fixed her."

Oh no!!! That definitely seems like a mom-resurrection scale thing to do for someone! She tries to imagine having a baby that was in constant pain and flinches away from the thought.

"They can still be happy. They're used to it. But I'm really glad he fixed her. He could've just used her for his spell instead of swans but he fixed her instead."

Even if it doesn't break their brains babies being in pain sounds super bad.

"Yeah the place I came from suuuuuucked but Serik wrecked it and killed the evil gods and stuff."

Good.

(Sekar could probably kill evil gods if he wanted to but fortunately there aren't any around and wait. Sekar. Serik. Torture. Um.

A familiar face flashes across her mind.)
