Edie was perusing the latest correspondence from her fork. She still should have been paying enough attention to realize that the door didn't go where it ought before it swung shut and she couldn't sense anyone else anymore, but she wasn't.
After opening and closing the door a couple times to make sure she hadn't just been abducted somehow, she looks around.
He buries his head in his wife's arms and mumbles to her, you do the talking.
"Um. We, um. Both, forgot, that my previous Vala-sourced birth control solution is no longer in effect."
"Of course. He said it had been about a week, I assume you've--"
"Okay. So for now--fancy future birth control pills," she hands her a bottle, "and fancy future condoms--do you know how condoms work?"
"A condom is a thin cover that goes over your penis so that when you ejaculate the semen goes into it and not your partner. The ones available in the early days of the twenty-first century had a small but non negligible failure rate; they've improved since then on my Earth."
"I am pretty sure I can also just decide to be sterile, I don't know how exactly but it should definitely be possible -"
"Is this the kind of thing where you would definitely know if you had done it right?"
"Not definitely enough, we should also use some of Edie's tech stuff, but pretty definitely -"
"Okay. Fancy future pills of this particular variety won't do anything if you've already knocked her up by accident, and will take probably only a few days but potentially up to a month before working reliably, so until then use the condoms if you're going to have vaginally penetrative intercourse. And here is a fancy future clock, which will keep track of your subjective time for you. And here is a box of pee-on-a-stick pregnancy tests. Should be reliable after three weeks subjective."
"We've still got a fair bit of food." And haven't even touched the clothes. "Thanks."
She basks in the affection for a moment, sending her own in return. "That could have been more awkward," she says after a bit.
