The USS Cardinal is on high alert. Technically speaking, they're not expecting an attack, this is a stop to take on supplies. But it's known that the inhabitants of this planet are only following Federation law in appearance, and are bending and breaking it wherever they can get away with. It means that the crew are all on edge, and the Security Chief had already been relieved from her post after she managed to break one of the consoles.
"Okay," she agrees, smiling at him a little.
He pushes himself carefully up so he's sitting, and reaches out an arm to wrap around her. "You two okay?"
She wraps an arm around him too, immediately. "Yeah. A little worn out, but -- no trouble."
"You slept right?"
"Yeah. Autumn took first watch."
"Good, that's- good."
Lee squeezes him.
"How much do you remember?" she asks, after a little while.
"Mmm. Not much. All kinda blurry. Mostly--mostly you and Autumn being there. Other people?"
"Yeah," she says, her arm tightening around him. "Asked our mysterious friend for help. I didn't -- I couldn't -- "
"Hey. M'okay. We're okay? Was the right call."
She leans into him. "Yeah. Worked out okay."
"What they like?"
"Our mysterious helper was --" she describes his appearance briefly. "Offered to help carry you, but backed off when I refused. Seemed a little uncomfortable. Talked a bit about his past when I asked him why, later -- I don't know how much you remember of that?"
"Not...masses. Broadstrokes. He was... on the streets? At some point?"
"Yeah." She repeats what he said, as best she can remember it. "And he wanted to know what we needed -- that's why I was pushing about his motives so much -- so after that I told him we could use more fruits and vegetables, and he said he would add that. He brought us here, said we could use this cabin, and let us be."
"He seem level?"
"Yeah. Autumn said he was being genuine enough to make him uncomfortable, too."
"That's something I suppose."
Lee squeezes him. "I -- don't know how much we can trust them but -- they did help."
"At least enough that if this happens again..."
Lee squeezes him. "Yeah. They did offer to fix more of it, but -- yeah."
He squeezes her back. "Hey, m'here, m'good."
She leans into him.
"The other two people we saw were the doctors -- one of them was -- I don't actually know what -- some kind of fairly human-looking alien, I think? She was -- trying not to be scary, I think. Asked before doing things."
"I'm guessing she wasn't exactly succeeding at the 'not scary' thing?"
"She -- was with her mannerisms? It was what she was that was scary."
