"Daniel, you are not responsible for the airmen. You know this. They are there to keep an eye on you. Stop beating yourself up about it."

"But it is my job to deal with alien stuff in languages that the airmen don't understand. I didn't even see that button that he touched. I missed something important, Jack. Really important, and someone could have gotten seriously hurt because I guessed wrong!"

He's gesticulating quite wildly, finally letting the truth fly.

"Then don't guess. Know. This is not your fault, and if you don't stop taking the blame for this... I will give it to you and you'll be on probation. No more off world visits for a month."

He deflates, Jack has gotten very good at handling his moods over the course of their friendship.

"Fine. I'll figure it out."

He skulks back to his office, where it will likely take him at least 2 months without interruptions to figure out, so in the mountain, more like 3 and a half.

Teal'c visits him partway through this interval.

He's surrounded by papers everywhere on his desk, his walls covered in bookcases of rare items and book upon books or archeological and anthropological books, as well as those covering languages over the ages. He has a pin board of photos of the temple blown up and a white board filled with barely legible drawings and words.

"Hey Teal'c." He waves haphazardly, too busy drinking his fifth cup of coffee for the morning and staring at the work before him to make eye contact with his greeting.

"You seem to be working very hard, Daniel Jackson. Do you mind an interruption?"

"Just struggling with these inscriptions. Nothing that won't save for another time. Interrupt away Teal'c." He downs the last of his coffee and spins his wheelie chair in a full circle before stopping to face Teal'c, who remains as stoic as ever in the face of Daniel's caffeinated hyperactivity.

"Would you like some assistance?"

"You're definitely more likely to know than I am. Most of this I've translated fairly easily, while written differently, it's pronunciation is close to the Goa'uld we've seen and translated before. It goes on and on about the legacy of the 'House of Mik Al Son', the wrath of their father Mal Ok Er, all the usual narcissistic jabber that all Goa'uld use in their temple writings. Here, is the section on the 'Chamber of the Lost One', which from the story in the writings, is one of the six in this 'family' of Goa'uld that was critically injured and had to be put in an extended stay in the sarcophagus." At this point, he removes his glasses and pinches his furrowed brow with obvious discomfort.

"That's where it ends, rather abruptly, so we can assume the Goa'uld were chased from this temple, a good sign. But, uh, well, in this section, that we found in an alcove, it explains the, um, function and the use of the 'Chamber of the Lost One'. It's like a manual for this particular trap, which is incredibly fascinating. I figured out what we did wrong though. The second of the 'twin' symbols must be touched by 'a Godless host' so someone with the protein marker that signifies one who was once a Goa'uld but is no more. If Dr Carter touches it, the lightning will stop, and it won't even attempt to aim at her, it will only attempt to strike a human, or as this calls it, a 'slave'. Here is what has me stumped." With that he crosses to the other side of the same whiteboard where a picture and barely any form of translation exists.

"This section. '.--. .-. .. -- / -. .- .... / -.- .- .... / - .- ....' which translates from morse to Prim Nah Kah Tah. I've never seen any word like it. Have you?" He pinches his brow in frustration, the mystery and unsolvable nature of it all truly making him reach his limit. "Otherwise, we'll just have a force shield around the sarcophagus forever."

He reads the inscription carefully a few times. He's seen it before...

"I believe this means life force. A common translation is also blood. Apophis was not known to use such devices, they are ancient -- primitive technology. But not unknown."

"Well, as far as I can tell, these are some of the oldest Goa'uld we've encountered yet, so it makes sense. The better news is, I know how to turn off the shield. Just need a litre of Sam's blood and a quart of Naquadah to pour on it and ta dah. Thank you for your help Teal'c, I have to go tell Jack, this is amazing!"

He rushes off in search of Jack, for reasons of briefing and force field opening, leaving Teal'c standing in his office.

"You're welcome," he says to the empty room.

He finds Jack in his office.

"-- before you start, take a few breaths, Danny. And if the next words out of your mouth aren't 'I've found the solution', you're gonna have to run back to where you came from."

"I've found the solution!"

He's giddy like a school kid, but after his declaration, he takes a few deep breaths to calm down from the run.

"It's going to take a while, we need about a litre of the blood of someone who has the protein marker of a Goa'uld in them, and a quart of Naquadah to pour on the shield, and it will all power down. So we'll need to slowly gather that much blood from Sam, and get the Naquadah, and the good news is, the lightning won't even try to strike Sam. We can turn it off!"
