"Uh... like, a really big ball where people live and stuff?"

"You live on a ball? Why don't you all fall off?"

"Ah, my cousin says there's this thing called gravity that pushes us all to be stay stuck to the planet."

"Huh, we know about gravity, but we thought it only pulled people down."

"You're starting to sound like the kind of lost where they are going to need to stick you someplace to stay and then contact some obscure sorcerer to send you home or something."

He sighs.

"It wouldn't be the first time."

Gabe pats Ponder on the back. "Think of it as being in the middle of a future fun anecdote to tell at parties."

"I've never been to a party."

"What? A cute guy like you? Not the party type?"

"They seem boring and not a good use of my time."

"Nerd type?"

"I'm not quite sure what you mean?"

"Likes to stay at home and read all day."

"Oh, yes. That describes me."

"You will get along with my cousin, Henry. And he will be curious."

"I'm curious too."

Nod. "Speaking of getting along with people. I think they know where or with who you might get stuck with, now that I think about it."

"Who?" he asks, soundly slightly apprehensive.

"Well, if you're that much of a loner, they might send you to live by yourself at one of these plots at the edge of town. Assuming you don't mind taking on farming. The other candidates include the lovely Grayscale's family twin houses. Mr. White's husband and Mr. Black's wife don't get a long, but the Mary Jane's part of the house has room because her kids moved out to avoid the family drama. I know that each of Mary Jane's children moved to a different place and is accepting roommates. So those are the likely options. You might be interesting enough to be a guest at the mayor's house?"

"I don't need to impose on anyone."

"We don't have a inn or any other kind of place. And I am sure you're going to stay overnight at least once." Shrug.

"That would be very kind of them then, but I don't want to assume. I can sleep outside if I must."

Shrug. "They sign up as volunteers for this kind of emergency and I don't think their family drama is as bad as camping. You could check them out first though."

He nods, looking anxious.

They walk. When the reach the top of the hill they see a town between a lake and the ocean. Bright and pristine buildings cluster around a white-stone construction with a bell tower. Their road cuts a field of vivid blue flowers. There is a red-white lighthouse off-shore and a couple of hot-air balloons in the sky. It's extremely picturesque.
