Far, far above the lamp-posts

Feather flies around in circles until she is tired enough to approach calm again. (Greystripe gives up in protest halfway through and settles on a roof.) And then she climbs, spiraling up and up until she can see all of Westcrown.

This is her first time seeing the city at night; she always left at dusk, because the nights are short and they need to hunt in the morning before dawn. It looks pretty, from up here, with all those lamp-posts and lit windows, and the people running around with torches remind her of fireflies.

She didn't expect the humans in the city to stay up this late past sundown! Many of them are walking or running, often in groups. There seems to be shouting, but it's too confused to make out from up here. Another thing she doesn't understand about them. In the morning she'll ask if this was normal; maybe there's a festival?

Feather doesn't realize anything is wrong until a building is on fire.

Oh no! Feather has heard humans have trouble with fires in cities. If their houses burn down they'll want to log a lot more trees to replace them!

She'll... fly over the burning house and frantically create water over and over? Does that help?

The fire is at least not spreading anymore, but it probably will if she stops.

She can prepare quench in her free slot, she just needs the fire not to spread for fifteen minutes while she meditates!

There are more fires in the distance. And more shouting, and screaming.

At least now she knows why they're shouting!!

...First of all, she's going to fly back to Greystripe so they're not separated; out of control fires can be very nasty.

Some of the shouting humans she overflies on the way are using their torches to set fire to another house! Which has other humans inside it!

Aaagh she has no idea what's happening!! ...at least Greystripe's safe, come here Greystripe.

Normally she'd, well, ask people what the Hell they were doing but she can't talk to them in owl shape and if she changes to a human she won't be able to change back to fly away. Feather does not want to be trapped on foot in the middle of a burning human city! Why are they burning down their own city!!

...is there anything she can do? Except fly far enough away that even if the whole city burns down she'll be safe and then try to sleep?

She'd like to help people, but she has no idea how to find anyone in particular at night and couldn't talk to them anyway. She has a few cures prepared, but all her other spells are for running away. She has more berries for healing people, but she can't use them without shifting human. And she'd need to find someone who needs healing that no-one else is actively trying to kill. What is she supposed to do, fly around at random? Ugh, this is a terrible plan!

That's a griffon's cry! And someone's riding it! (Luckily, owls have excellent night vision.)

...they're picking up the horrible woman? Feather isn't going anywhere near her outside of convention hours.

There are bodies lying in the street, just - abandoned there. Why, city humans, WHY.

...actually, one of them just twitched?

Feather is going to very carefully fly down and bop him with cure light wounds and then fly back up, as fast as she can.

He scrambles up and looks around frantically and runs away!

That was Good? ...probably? Unless he's going to set more houses on fire with people inside?

What else can she even do here - oh wow that's an ominous-sounding voice in her head! She wonders why the caster didn't also say who they were. Maybe they're someone people wouldn't actually want to obey?

Entangle on a bunch of people running after a different bunch of people with apparent ill intent? She really hopes she's helping the right side, here -

And then it's raining! A sudden downpour, and the sky was clear a minute ago.

...Oh thank fuck, the adults are here.

Also owls are bad at wet flying, so Feather and Greystrike have to get out while they can. Luckily, this storm has a very well-defined perimeter. And now that the city probably isn't going to burn down, they'll... go sleep in the woods?

Feather really wishes she knew what was going on. But she has a mission and isn't allowed to take risks; if she dies, the Forest might not get its diplomats. And Greystripe will die far from home, and she's not going to risk him trying to help strangers. Maybe if she could find someone she knows, like Laia, but she can't, certainly not in the rain.

A sad and wet Feather flies away from the city. Maybe tomorrow morning someone will be able to explain what just happened. But she fears it will end up on the pile of Outsider-mysteries that she has to untangle before there can be understanding, and peace.
