"I see... Actually, now that I brought it up. What is up with werewolves? I mean, what can you tell me? I checked your internet and... why are they a secret? How dangerous are they? Powers and abilities, that general thing."

"Mostly they're secret by choice. Packs keep themselves in check, but if there are omegas, they sometimes have trouble with control, and then they start hurting people. Hunters step in, and so it's easier if we regulate ourselves."

Felix blinks. "...Hunters?"

"Yeah. They hunt werewolves who can't control their violent urges and start killing people."

"And hunting is an euphemism for tracking them down and arresting them?" Felix says with edges of both hope and hysteria in his voice.

"If they're part of a pack, yeah. They'll let alphas that can handle their packs the opportunity to resolve things internally. Omegas are different. They're alone, and out of control, and humans can't contain werewolves easily, without killing them."

"What they do with the omegas?!"

"They kill the ones no one can take responsibility for."

"Oh my god. Oh my god," Felix repeats, "there ought to be a better way than that."

"I'm sorry. It was hard for me seeing it, the first time. Hunters try to keep people safe. And any werewolf can be dangerous, they're not wrong to worry about those of us without packs."

"Then they should go to the government. Despite it's flaws any governmental justice system is likely to perform better judgement calls than a secret conspiracy that kills people as a form of justice. At least there ought to be more resources to contain instead of killing omegas! Who even becomes a hunter? Do these people also wear white hoods and burn crosses in the werewolves lawns?"

"The packs try to stay hidden from the government. The hunters didn't start that. They're not targeting us for no reason; werewolves are dangerous. They're wrong to kill us, but they're not wrong to think we might hurt someone."

"Why the packs stay hidden from the government?"

"Some of them like toying with the local humans, some want to live separately from them, some are afraid of what the government might do to them- registration, experimentation- there are a lot of reasons to want to hide."

"Urgh. That still sounds like something that is better handled without a masquerade, but I understand that shouting from the roof tops isn't a solution for the current state of the world. Do the packs at least do something with the werewolves that toy with humans? Actually, how many werewolves are out there? How do they evade human notice."

Pause.

"Are werewolves actually non-human?"

"There's some debate. We can start off as humans, like I did, but some are born that way. We all look human sometimes, though."

Felix is deeply troubled like this. "I understand that this isn't my universe, but this kinda of... terminology is deeply troubling for me, I don't have the option to not look like a skymage, but this doesn't make me any less - or more - human. Historically implying otherwise didn't had nice implications. The fact that you have some werewolf-killing secret police doesn't help."

"I think of myself as human, but Derek only sometimes does, and others like him, other born werewolves, seem to have the same attitude. They think that they're different than humans, and mostly better than them."

Now Felix looks disgusted. "Who is Derek?"

"Former alpha, kind of a decent guy now. Still thinks being a werewolf is a gift, though he's nicer about pushing it."

So many questions. "Pushing it?"

"He doesn't target scared and isolated teenagers and offer them the bite. I guess he can't now, but still, he's changed."

"I have so many questions that I don't know where to start? Could you give some context?"

"Derek was an alpha, and they can make more werewolves by biting or scratching people. He wanted more wolves, and he wanted a pack to help him fight another pack that was coming to town." 

"So, tell me in what ways this is different from recruiting teenagers to a gang?"
