Sapphire reacts to the speech.

Sapphire gripped her notebook tightly. She had intended to write down what was said while Daisy Decker was speaking but that feel the wayside as the sheer weight of what was being said crashed down on her.

The speech was over though. She took a few deep breaths and tried to ignore the explosion of voices. Daisy all but said she was giving them clues. She bent down to grab the pen she had dropped and picked it back up.

Even subtle bits of the wording might be important. She called on the techniques she had been taught in class for remembering what had been said and did her best to write it all down.

What else? Were there other things she should be recording? She took some notes about the crowd's reaction. Then some notes about her own reaction.

She was feeling helpless, she was worried about Tom's reaction when he found out, she was terrified of never getting out; all that was true but having it written out helped her find a small measure of detachment. It was a little like therapy that way.

Alright, she'd written down everything she could think of. Maybe none of it would matter, but at least for now she was going to keep taking notes. It helped to act like she was getting out, and maybe something would turn out to be useful.

What next?

Honestly at this point she wanted some quiet. She brought up her interface and found the button to ask to be assigned a nearby apartment.

Then she started walking according to the map directions.

She did a bit of people watching as she walked. There was a whole gamut of reactions. The people crying or yelling were the most dramatic but a number of people were more composed. One or two even seemed to be hiding smiles for some reason. She wondered why. Maybe they really didn't like their waking lives.

Already a lot of people were starting to walk towards one of the surrounding buildings like her. She gazed up at the towering hexagonal building that would be her new home. There was a lot of glass but it seemed tinted such that she couldn't really see inside from the ground.

She stepped inside with as much composure as she could manage and looked around. It looked like there were entrances on each side of the building. The ground floor seemed mostly empty. There were some tables and chairs like you might find in a corporate lobby in the corners of the large room, and there were potted plants scattered around the edges of the room.

A small crowd of people were waiting for the elevators, fussing with control panels to summon the cars. Dings sounded a couple times as she took in the room, as elevators arrived. There was also a single staircase that seemed largely neglected.

She checked her interface. She was on the fifth floor that was low enough that she could walk.

She made her way to the staircase and started climbing. Apparently the staircases in this building were in a sort of spiraling pattern, each staircase brought her up one floor and then she had to turn to the next side of the hexagon before continuing upwards.

As she climbed she looked at the common areas, it looked like they were divided into three sections per floor, though without any doors between them. As she climbed she saw a number of sections configured as a large kitchen and dining space with several of each of the major appliances. The other spaces she saw seemed more varied. One was configured for playing board games, another had some arcade games, still another was setup as a small home theatre, and as she reached her floor there was an area with a billiards table and a fooseball table, with some smaller seating around them. Curious she finished out the circuit on her floor to find a small library and another kitchen.

She backtracked and took a few minutes to look over the shelves. It was a nice mix of fiction and non-fiction. The fiction seemed like a pretty good mix between genre fic and some more generic stuff. The non-fiction was eclectic but it seemed generally skewed towards textbooks, how-to books and history. There wasn't much memoir, pop-sci or stuff about the modern day.

With that little indulgence finished she brought back up her map and found her way to her apartment. She'd gotten one of the rectangular ones. On her way she checked out one of the bathrooms. They were separate from the apartments, that was a little annoying, but at least they were individualized. Each block of five apartments had three of them.

Out of curiosity she opened the door to one and poked her head in and wow. A full half of the generous space was taken up by an enormous shower/walk in tub hybrid. It wasn't something anyone but kids would be swimming in but she thought anyone except maybe the tallest of basketball players would be able to lie down.

She decided to investigate more closely so she stepped fully in and closed and locked the door behind her. The tub had caught her attention first so she looked more closely at that first. Her inspection revealed a fairly involved if well laid out control panel for temperature, controlling which portions of the ceiling and walls were spraying water in shower mode and the jacuzzi jets for when it was being used as a tub. There was also a hand held shower wand mounted on the wall for if someone wanted that.

It was a small thing but the surprise and the sheer luxuriousness of it broke through her malaise and made her really smile for the first time since that awful speech.

She moved onto the other half of the room. It was less exciting but it did have a nice sink with a small amount of counter space and a toilet. There was also a small table to put things on while you were using the room and a couple racks with fresh towels. Below the table was a small washer-dryer hybrid. It wasn't enough to do a full load of laundry at once but it seemed like it would be enough to do a couple days worth of laundry at a time.

She took the opportunity to actually use the facilities before finally making her way to her apartment. It opened at her touch on the doorknob. A small notification in her interface said that was the default and she could set it to require confirmation before opening if she preferred.

She scribbled down a note to think about that later before opening her door and walking in. There was what looked like a king sized bed about halfway down the mostly open space. It had nightstands on each side. Up against the windows there was a desk with a small area light. There were also lights mounted into the ceiling throughout the unit. A dresser and a loveseat closed out the collection of furniture. She turned back and opened the closet.

"Well that's a little creepy."

The closet was filled with clothes and they all looked to be her size. There were a few dresses, and skirts but most of what was hanging up were various tops. They tended towards athletic wear with a couple of sets that looked more like military equipment including what looked like a bulletproof vest with a bunch of pockets on it. On an upper shelf was a helmet of some kind, and below the hanging clothes was a collection of shoes. Most of the shoes were practical to match the other clothes but there were a few pairs of heels and some flip-flops.

She continued over to the dresser and found jeans and slacks along with a few more skirts and blouses. Also contained therein were a variety of panties and bras, and a small collection of swimwear. Following the pattern most of them were pretty genetic or athletic leaning but there were some more daring numbers included.

"And it got creepier. Like... it's nice to have and I don't think I saw clothing stores on the map but I'm not sure I like the game giving me lingerie unprompted. I guess on the bright side at least they didn't give me sex toys. That definitely would have been worse."

She shook her head and walked over to the bed before letting herself fall onto it face down.

She could update her notes and pour over her old ones for clues later. For now she just wanted a nap.
