"Just wait until they meet you. Everyone had started worrying about imprinting, a little. What if it was someone who wasn't good for us, or someone dangerous? Emily came around, but Leah was so hurt. This is great, though! You already know, I didn't even tell you, and you can help us plan on what to do. Things will be a lot easier with your help. None of us are really great at planning, even Sam."

"Can you teach your shapeshifting ability?"

"We can't really share it with other people. It would be great if everyone could turn into wolves so no one would drink their blood! It's just not something that can happen. It's only guys in our tribe so far. If I could give you a better way to protect yourself I would." He glances outside. "Oh, could we stop at the diner? I'm getting hungry, and they have coffee too."

Ryou nods and pulls into the parking lot.
She's heading inside before Scott can get out of his seat.

Scott follows! Once inside, he casually steps in front of her. Convenient, since a few of the other patrons are staring. Maybe albinos are a foreign concept. Or maybe people like to gossip. A few boys at a table near the back start laughing, though certainly not about Ryou and Scott. This is a very friendly little town.

"Hey Macey," Scott says, as the waitress leads them to a booth. She smiles tentatively, avoiding eye contact with Ryou.

"Good to see you again, Scott. Everyone wanted to know what happened to you, you never come around anymore! Just because you're part Quileute doesn't mean you have to live with them. It's getting a little weird how much time you spend there. If you ask me, that Sam should spend time with people his own age."

Ryou observes and orders a coffee.

Scott bites his lip. "Thanks for worrying, but I'm okay. My friend here wanted to have some coffee, and I thought we should stop here. Can I have a turkey on rye?"

"Coming right up," she says, looking somewhat dismayed. "And remember, if you need someone to talk to about Sam and his friends, we're all still there for you."

After she leaves, Scott turns to Ryou. "This is kind of embarrassing, but I don't think I got your name yet? I'm Scott."

"Ryou."

"Cool. So was there anything you wanted to do before we go meet the pack? Otherwise we can go after you finish eating."

Scott eats his sandwich rapidly, clearly hungry.

He's halfway done before Ryou has touched her coffee.

Ryou does not touch her coffee.

"I am not yet convinced that I want to meet them."

"Why not? It would probably help you stay safe in Forks."

"I came to see what was frightening the vampires. Now I have. I see no reason to stay."

"..."

"Okay. Where are you headed, I can be packed by tonight."

"I do not need your assistance."

"So there's something I should probably mention about us? The Quileutes. We tend to get attached quickly, to certain people. Out of the blue, just like I did earlier when I first saw you. If that makes sense."

"Like vampires?"

"Maybe we should talk somewhere more private."

He quickly scarfs down the rest, still maintaining rudimentary table manners, and gets up.

"That seems risky."

"That seems important since we're talking about sensitive topics. We don't have to be out of sight of anyone, just out of hearing range."

"Very well."
Ryou heads out the door, and over to lean against her car.

"So what we do, is we meet a girl. And when we see her, we can't stop seeing her. She becomes the focus of our thoughts, everything we do going forward is about her. That's what happened to me. I don't want to hurt you by keeping you here, but I don't you to get hurt somewhere I can't protect you. I don't know how to resolve this. I can spend the rest of my life missing you, if you're safe, but thinking about that makes me feel like crying. Any ideas?"

"It will not fade, or choose another target?"

"We don't have any stories about it fading, and we can't choose another target on purpose. Sam was trying the best he could to change it, we all know how hard it was. He's our only real example, but the legends all say it's permanent. Our ancestors gave up their wolves to grow old with their imprints."

"Besides protection, what does the focus compel you to do?"
