Girls who walk through the woods alone should never wander off the path of pins. If you follow the path of pins into the woods, and back out, you're fine. So you've come out with a bit more magic than the usual girl your age; more the better, really, if you can protect your loved ones. However, you might just get lost on the path of pins, and then where would you be? A witch.

Worse still are the girls who walk the path of needles. Those who walk both ways can at least serve their community as weavers of fate, unmarriageable though they may be. But the ones who walk one way, and don't walk back out? The roses, creatures of swirling teeth and blades and claws. Werewolves, dragons, and every other monster from the fairy tales that her parents always told her.

Those who walk the path of pins both ways become hearths. They pin others to express their love, and grant protection.

Those who walk the path of pins one way become witches. They place their burs in the air to enthrall, ensnare, or entertain in order to trap their targets.

Those who walk the path of needles both ways become weavers. They transform the threads of friendship, folkways, and fate that connect everyone.

Those who walk the path of needles one way become roses. They do nothing but draw blood.

(And the fairer sex? Men who walk the path of pins become princes. Princes give boons, which are weird and cool items which are appreciated, fun, but not necessarily useful)
