Heavily influenced my local myths and folktales, Men In Black, Stargate, Star Trek, Starwars, and some heavily watered down Cthulhu Mythos. Earth has a lot of alien residents as well and the local Governments can't really prevent them from doing stuff, so the aliens have all collectively agreed to protect Earth in return for residence.
