Non-spoilery established facts:
- There are mad scientists. Mostly competent ones, even. (Nobody can agree on a non-derogatory term to call the general category, even though there's enough of them that it is a general category.)
- There are other sorts of villains enough that “supercrime” is a meaningful concept for the general public. (Nothing has been established about heroes.)
- On the other side, superhero teams are a thing.
Arguably minor-spoiler facts:
- There are alien seed things that fall from space and combine with whatever lifeform is nearest. Usually, this results in some kind of minor plant monster.
