a boarding school in thomassia

Getting to the boarding school after taking the bullet train most of the way would just be a fast subway ride; here, the subways run on the Leap Gauge, and they're positively enormous on the inside. Rosie was full of excitement to see her new classmates and experience Lightcone City for herself. She was born in a lonely mining town, and the first years of her life were full of fun and wonder. But she wanted to spend more time with children her age, and go to a real school, and go on tons of fun adventures! So, it was a matter of asking her mom and dad about moving from their outpost city to a "real city" where she'd have the chance to make lots of friends her age and to get to see much more of the world than just her sleepy hometown.

Finally stepping out from her train, and making her way up to the streets, she was full of excitement. It was just a short escalator trip up from the tunnels. Looking up from the street level at the skyscraper where she'd be living for the next few years, she could see the vast atriums behind huge sheets of gently sloped glass, designed to give the illusion of being outdoors, with children having fun playing tag or looking at an excited teacher explaining something that must have been amazing fun to learn.

Rosie made her way into the inviting and bright lobby of the skyscraper, quickly finding the elevator that would take her to her floor and room, the elevator racing down to pick her up as she headed for her unit. It took just 30 seconds to take her up, before it finally stopped at the landing to the floor above the atrium. She walked out, waving at her teacher, Miss Lorentz, before making her way down the stairs to be given the key to her unit. She introduced herself quickly, before taking the key to get a look at where she'd be living going forwards.

The new design of the "maximally outdoors" dorms was fairly new and untested; like everything else the RRF worked on, it wanted to be efficient via multi-purpose and tightly integrated design. The wide corridor leading into the dorms doubled as a balcony, where the children could stand up and stretch freely, helping them have better circulation and make themselves more comfortable as they would get more elbow room for themselves during any classes.

Heading inwards from the balcony, opening the glass door that fit in seamlessly with the glass wall, there were 2 rooms: a main room that was a great place to study by yourself, and a bathroom hidden behind a door. It, as was typical for thomassia, had a pool that used the walls of the bathroom, letting it fit in seamlessly with the wall and be more efficient in terms of space.

Rosie smiled at seeing the fun design of her dorm. What she was more excited about, of course, would be meeting her classmates. She was mildly confused by the idea of... sitting at the balcony of your home, looking down at the teacher, in class? But she'd probably fall in love with it. In any case, she threw the backpack that she had managed to forget she had on onto the bed and grabbed her phone, tapping a few buttons to start connecting it to the room's projector and showing a bit of info about her new home. She got a view of some of the subway lines, nature trails, pools, parks and many other fun things that the city had to offer. Getting to see everything would be so exciting!

After a short period of getting acquainted to some of the features of her new city, Rosie made her way down the atrium, watching a few of the kids walking around. on the soft, grassy floor. She saw a group of boys sitting in a circle, discussing some of the fun things that they learned about the age of diesel ships, before they turned over to get a look at Rosie. "Hi Rosie!", one of them said. "I'm Harold, and I'm so excited to see you! What do you think you'll be learning while you're here? Do you plan on trying out some boardgames, or are you more into play-battles?"

"I'm mostly into boardgames, I come from somewhere where everyone's an adult so I didn't get many chances to do play-battles. But it'll be fun to start trying them!" "I'm glad you think that, play-battles are probably the most fun thing in the world. Have you thought about which era you like best?" "I think it's actually the spears-era, for me."

Harold nods at Rosie, returning to talking with the other boys. Rosie is full of excitement at being able to play with other kids her age! Her first play-battle will probably be amazing. Rosie should probably be getting a school uniform first, though. Schools tend to have very different uniforms; she's excited to see what she'll look like in this school's uniform.

Rosie walked up to Lorentz, asking her a few things. "What are you thinking, in terms of classes to here?" "I think we'll do math, industrial arts and history. Two of the boys are thinking about doing something with the Atom Guard, so there might be a combat class once in a while, as well. Do you have any jobs you want to get to trying on, Rosie?" "I haven't quite made up my mind about that, actually. But I think I want to do something where I can see people being happier.

I came to ask about the school uniform, actually." Lorentz looks over Rosie. "Well, the indoors uniform is fairly normal, and it's not like you need to get one right now. I think you should find out what your favorite athletic activities are, and get settled in a bit more, and then get a uniform."

Rosie nods at Miss Lorentz. "Yeah, I think finding out what I'm doing in terms of athletics, and buying those together with the uniform, makes the most sense. Do you know who's the athletic counselor around here?" "That would be Fenton, he also helps with many kinds of excursions. If you send him a message, he'll help you try out the athletics options available here, here's his contact-id." Lorentz says the numbers and letters that need to be typed in to contact him, and Rosie quickly sends off a message; she's excited to try the huge amount of athletics that a city like this would presumably have available.

Rosie found her way to Fenton's office, a few floors down. It was placed right next to one of the skyscraper's gym areas. He nodded at her as she made her way in. There was a huge poster showing a huge variety of exciting sports: swimming, diving, cycling, weightlifting, running, skiing, and mountain climbing among them. "So, you were curious about what kinds of athletic activities you think you'd enjoy? Is there anything that seems tempting?"

"I think I'm sticking to the classic trio: swimming, diving and cycling. I think that climbing seems scary, and I don't want all the muscles of weightlifting!"

"I think that scary can mean exciting, and that weightlifting can give you a real good feeling of empowerment and progress, which can feel great. And you can just... show up and try them, you know?"

Rosie nods. "But I'm pretty sure that I'm doing the classic trio, and I want to try out the other stuff a bit, too. Do you know good places to go, to try a bit of everything?"

Fenton blinks twice, quite slowly. "Yes, there tend to be a few places where I like to have intro classes with lots of other kids. I can send you a message, whenever there's a new tryout-class like that? If you want."

Rosie nods at Fenton. "Yes, I absolutely do. So, now I guess I should start buying some proper equipment for that, huh?" "Yup! I'm sure you're going to love seeing some of the trails or exploring some of the diving spots here."
