"I don't think they were expecting me to meet magic people who could turn them into trees and if they had they would have killed me even though I held still."

" - yes but in general people hating them is bad for them, compared to people not hating them, you don't have to expect magic to expect it is better for people to not hate you."

"Killing innocent people because you want their stuff does not seem sensible to me but I guess maybe it's sensible if you're evil."

"Do you want to get anything while we're in the city?"

"I don't know what there is here."

"What things might you want in the next couple days?"

"I need food. I won't be able to read your books. I will want to wear different clothes if there is a special occasion or I spill something or it's a new day. And separate ones for sleeping. I need a tooth kit and a comb and soap."

"Then we should get those things," he nods. "Well, not books, those are too hard to make to be giving away."

"Hard to make?"

"Someone has to write them and it takes a long time."

"But once someone has written it can't you print the words for anybody who wants a copy? Even if you don't have computers."

"...how would we do that?"

"I am positive it was before electricity. I don't know exactly how."

"Well if you think how maybe we can try it."

"A grown up from my world would probably know. It'd be a yellow thing, you should ask a yellow." She tries not to think about her great uncle Bar.

"It's like the people who sweep the streets here."

"What's like people who sweep the streets?"

"Your great-uncle."

"...I don't understand."

"Here no one thinks there's anything wrong with it if you sweep the streets, and if you went to the street-sweepers and told them that actually they are disgusting and shouldn't touch their wife who does glassblowing or something, they would be so sad. And in your world no one thinks it's wrong for two men to act like they're married and if we go and tell them they're disgusting they'll be really sad. But maybe we have to do it anyway, I don't know."
