Shannah was having a totally normal day, like always. She loved her job making pastries and coffee and tea, letting her cafe be a place for her local community to have fun with board games, just have some pleasant conversations, or get a chance to meet new people. She never got tired of experimenting with her recipes, trying out new experiments in cocoa, tea and coffee constantly, together with some of her fellow cafe owners. But she knew that today would be different. Just about every newschannel and group chat was saturated with excited messages, curious to see the important announcement that the mayor had scheduled a surprise Light Pollution Awareness Night for. It was gossip that she had heard all day as she served her customers in the cafe! She was full of excitement as she finally made her way back to her apartment, eagerly sitting down on the couch in front of the projector wall in her main room. A life-size image of the mayor, a man in his 30s, and standing in front of a greenscreen with an image of a beautifully drawn image of a landscape from a vividly colorful alien planet, was beamed onto her wall.
"As you can be sure to have noticed during this unusually dimly lit evening, today was an unannounced Light Pollution Awareness Day. I was going to say that we have something special prepared, like last year's Centuries of Heroism exhibit, but we have something special that's the opposite of prepared. That's right, it's the holiday that every mayor loves being able to pull off for his constituents, a Pandemic Awareness Week! Go through your checklists, people, because I don't want you to be caught unprepared today, let alone when you'll really want to be ready! We'll see how fast the timeline is for getting everyone sniffers, and see how well we manage to stop the spread of the Tracer Virus, but I want all of you to hunker down and stay safe for tonight!"
Shannah grinned. She remembered how fun and exciting it was to help the adults fight off the viruses the first time she took part in a Pandemic Awareness Week, when she was just 6. She's going to look forward to seeing the news and the researchers talking about what new steps they're taking to protect people from this unexpected "illness" this time around!
