Thomassians experience a perfectly ordinary holiday

Shannah was having a totally normal day, like always. She loved her job making pastries and coffee and tea, letting her cafe be a place for her local community to have fun with board games, just have some pleasant conversations, or get a chance to meet new people. She never got tired of experimenting with her recipes, trying out new experiments in cocoa, tea and coffee constantly, together with some of her fellow cafe owners. But she knew that today would be different. Just about every newschannel and group chat was saturated with excited messages, curious to see the important announcement that the mayor had scheduled a surprise Light Pollution Awareness Night for. It was gossip that she had heard all day as she served her customers in the cafe! She was full of excitement as she finally made her way back to her apartment, eagerly sitting down on the couch in front of the projector wall in her main room. A life-size image of the mayor, a man in his 30s, and standing in front of a greenscreen with an image of a beautifully drawn image of a landscape from a vividly colorful alien planet, was beamed onto her wall.

"As you can be sure to have noticed during this unusually dimly lit evening, today was an unannounced Light Pollution Awareness Day. I was going to say that we have something special prepared, like last year's Centuries of Heroism exhibit, but we have something special that's the opposite of prepared. That's right, it's the holiday that every mayor loves being able to pull off for his constituents, a Pandemic Awareness Week! Go through your checklists, people, because I don't want you to be caught unprepared today, let alone when you'll really want to be ready! We'll see how fast the timeline is for getting everyone sniffers, and see how well we manage to stop the spread of the Tracer Virus, but I want all of you to hunker down and stay safe for tonight!"

Shannah grinned. She remembered how fun and exciting it was to help the adults fight off the viruses the first time she took part in a Pandemic Awareness Week, when she was just 6. She's going to look forward to seeing the news and the researchers talking about what new steps they're taking to protect people from this unexpected "illness" this time around!

"Kids, we're going on a camping trip! Bring your tents, it'll be fantastic!" Horace took every chance he had to send the kids on a school trip. And they seemed to enjoy it just as much as he did, judging by their cheers as he told them before they had a chance to head out and play. The kids quickly changed into their hiking gear and simple, transparent-fabric masks, before following him into the hugely spacious elevator. The Pandemic Awareness Week had started yesterday, and they were universally happy to take part. They spread out into the corners, but the 14 of them still ended up a bit too closely-packed to really be ideal. It doesn't take long before the elevator takes them down to the tunnel leading into the subway, where they didn't have to wait long before getting a subway train to take. There's less traffic on Pandemic Awareness Weeks, leaving them with plenty of space for their luggage without having to worry about bumping into anyone. The train practically flies past the stations, picking up a few extra passengers, before the group end up near the outskirts of town.

Horace leads the kids out of the subway station, waving at the waiting bus driver. He walks in with the kids, enjoying the hour-or-so drive out into the well-supplied rest stop near the entrance to the primordial woods surrounding the Parent City. They start their hike, looking forward to getting to see some of the beauty of the nature and the coziness of sleeping in just a tent and sleeping bag.

Mona was mildly annoyed when she read the news about the Pandemic Awareness Week after falling asleep earlier than usual yesterday. She'd given birth a week or so ago, and was more than happy to spend at least a few more days resting up in the care center. She had a beautiful son that she was happy to spend nearly every waking moment with, but that didn't not make it an exhausting thing to do. She found the roleplay of the Pandemic Awareness Day more silly than anything else, but she probably wouldn't notice too big a difference from how her recovery would have been if it hadn't happened.

As that thought entered her head, one of the nurses walked in with her food in a tray. Mona unfolded the bedside table that the food would be placed on, quickly reaching for the cutlery and taking a bite after the nurse placed the food down for her to eat. The nurse wasn't wearing just a transparent mask over her nose and mouth, but a pair of plastic goggles as well. Mona shuddered thinking about the silly outfits that she'd put on if it turned out that she or her son were to be "put in quarantine." The food was fantastic as always, an incredibly well-done tandoori chicken from one of the ghost kitchens she liked best. The nurse left her and her son in her room, nodding quickly as Mona kept eating her meal.

Shannah ran through the checklist: mask, medicine, money, space. She slowly and carefully moved the couch over the soft floor, wanting to vacate a bit more space in her main room. Although it's obviously just a roleplay thing, she always loved preparing the space for a "home clinic" in case "she got sick and wanted at-home treatment". She was curious to see how quickly the sniffers would be sent to her; it was always incredible that they'd be able to do the whole training process and everything else in just a few days. She had the same generic, washable mask as everyone else, as well as a "real" respirator and a full-coverage bodysuit to wear under anything else, so she was super-prepared; it was similar for medicine, and she had plenty of money from her cafe. She was so looking forward to meeting everyone else and seeing people walk around in their cool new PPE systems this afternoon!
