An invitation to a party appears on various university billboards inviting people to the Kappa Alpha greek house located in the mostly finished Castle Commonwealth mall on the edge of town. The notice instructs people to follow the access road at 67 Lost Nation drive and enter through the back door and promises that signs will be posted to guide people to the party itself.
"I think we'd all like to get home. But at least we can raid this place for advanced technological knowledge first."
Riley brings in the last of the food. "So, food's unloaded. Are we going to head down to the Library or do people have other ideas?"
"We should pick out bedrooms and get our clothes put away. Maybe someone less tired than me should take the newcomers to get some clothes of their own."
"I could probably do it, but I should also do the training thing on the computers."
"I'm decently in shape, and besides we don't need to go far to find a decent clothing store. No bikes required."
Riley leads the way down the ramp, the other three also follow. Soon enough they're in the library again.
Linda also sits down at a computer, figures out how to access the training module and starts working on that.
While doing that she says to Alex, "Hey, you should test to see if you can get the phones to work by hooking them up to the computer."
The training is under the employment section for her. Riley sits down at one of the free computers and starts in on her own training.
"I should do that." He jogs out of the library and comes back a little later with a phone and a cable. He sits down in front of one of the computers and examines it until he finds a port to plug the cable into. He enters the interface section and is greeted by three options: application sync, phone configuration and diagnostics. He chooses phone configuration. The screen that appears next offers him the chance to select a custom phone number or generate a random valid number. He hits the button for random. It also has options for enabling or disabling mesh networking, data satellite connections, and localizer satellite connections. All three are initially off and he switches them all to on.
He turns on the phone and tries to dial his grandmother. There's a gentle bell like sound and then a voice says "No device is currently assigned this number please try again."
"Well, that's not a good sign."
"So we can't call home? It would be so good to at least be able let people know we're alive and trying to get home."
"I can keep fiddling with things but it doesn't look like it on initial inspection." He backs out and picks diagnostics. Almost all of them focus on hardware and all the available network diagnostics come up completely green. "Yeah, it looks like we can't call home."
"Right. So we need to sort out bedrooms, and these four need clothes and things. So who is doing what?"
"I already offered to take them shopping and it doesn't look like the phone situation requires my attention. As long as the bedrooms are mostly the same I don't think I have strong preferences, maybe put me close to Claire and Emily?"
"I've got to finish this thing, but I imagine the bedrooms are probably all pretty much the same? So it really doesn't matter, as long as Anna and I get ones near each other."
