Tiffany actually remembers that 'The Estates' is supposedly the world that the Practice and its epitomising Authorities come from, because it was like half an hour ago for her and she has a good memory.

"Could she use help, and were any animals harmed in the creation of this sausage roll?"

"It is notionally the case that she could use help but in practice you have to function at a pretty high level to be of great help to someone who has many orders of magnitude more attention than a normal human and a power that makes everything she touches upon work supernaturally efficiently. Most of our raw ingredients and many of our finished products either from custom universes configured to just spontaneously produce that form of base matter, or they are conjured directly from the platonic realm as needed. No animals have been harmed, unless you consider the wizards horrified by our profligate and base use of their ancient and sublime arts."

She smiles politely at the horifying of narrow-minded wizards and withdraws her fingers from the food, wipes them down befoe returning to the scrylet. Two further rounds of questions to get a straight answer to 'do you make this food or summon it?' Possibly the question was phrased too indirectly; she should find one where she's comfotabl being very blunt.

(She hasn't had a proper sausage roll since she was a kid.)

Back to the Traveler to finish that section.

[ ] Litanal Accession [-1 Remittance] - A war's needs are dire, and Orden is charitable even to ex-rivals. On the Traveler's behalf and wish, he acquired the Litanies, and passed them onto him.

huh

Once more then, may the torch be passed on. The Traveler shall use the Litanies to bind his own Litanal access to you, a surprisingly unimaginative yet effective process.

Is that once ever? One gift of this scope to her, but does claiming it mean it's foreclosed to all others forever...

The Traveler won't stay around to train you beyond the simplest of basics needed to use each of the Six Litanies. Training manuals and teachers are difficult to acquire, even in the Alliance.

Will th wiki explain what each of the Six Litanies are, tap?

[ ] Litanist (2 orbs) - The Litanies are one of the most versatile, potent systems of magic in the multiverse, so it follows that the Dominion built and sustained by them is arguably the mightiest superpower in existence. The ability to reshape reality with words alone is the birthright of every child fortunate enough to be born under its auspices. For most, however, that potential will never be realized. Theoretical ability alone does not confer relevance, and the ephemeral egalitarianism of the Litanies proves as illusory as any Reassurance.

[content omitted for irrelevance]

The power of the Litanies is correlated with ontological proximity to the Dominion. It is recommended, but not required, that you choose it as your insertion point.

A/N: Here's an extremely abbreviated overview of the six Litanies.

  • Reaping. Destruction, curses, self-empowerment by diminishing victims; resource-based, attacks and stolen attributes like health/luck are quantified as Coin.
  • Reinforcement. Enhancement of self/others, can create magical equipment/creatures, ranging from sharper knives and longer-lived dogs to magitech and kaiju.
  • Reciprocity. Manipulation of social & physical connections, versatile and good at propagating effects, but reliant on preparation/foci; think Chevalier from Worm + Kingkiller's Sympathy.
  • Reassurance. Lie-based, mind tricks/illusions that can temporarily affect reality; high potential, but advancement requires committing to a theme/changes the Litanist as much as the world.
  • Revelation. Scrying, purely mental enhancements, precognition, and prophetic probability manipulation. The narrowest Litany, but contains powerful effects.
  • Repulsion. Divided into banishment and warding; blunt-but-powerful offense/anti-magic and broad-spectrum fortifications/personal defenses. Banishment of a death is the only means of non-prophylactic (e.g. Reciprocal phylacteries) Litanal resurrection.

"reshape reality with words alone" sounds very free-form but the descriptions of the Litanies are of specific, narrow lines that you can advance along. So what are they? This keeps calling them very powerful, but also weaker as one moves away from the Dominion that is surrounded by impassable traps. Add the implied once-ever the emphasis that they're weak without proper training which, oh, outside the Dominion-you-can't-get-to could really only via one of these four: she's not likely to ask for this. Good candidate for a blunt question that doesn't expose too much, then.

"In the Litany of Repulsion, is banishing the death of a single person an easy or difficult or rarely-in-history-heard-of feat? Roughly how long a period of training would it take, for one granted the Traveler's Litanal Accession?"

"Noting that not all death is equal in difficulty to so banish, it would be fair to describe it as a common feat; the well connected of the Dominions do not fear death. I have heard tell of an academy teaching assistant, not a century in age, who killed students who annoyed him and then raised them after class without concern - hardly respectable pedagogy, but if he was notably good at his job he'd be a less impressive example. For one as untalented as the Litinal Accession alone would leave you, it might take you decades of dedicated training to become able to raise those newly dead to causes of no particular elevation. Of course, it would be foolish to take the Litinal Accession without combining it with other options which increase your affinity; I imagine you could start talented enough with the right choices to figure it out more or less immediately."

...update she is now reconsidering the value of the Litanies.

"Like what right choices?"

"Sufficient Dawn, obviously - and Lesser Clarity or any form of physical enhancement to ensure you get as much as possible. A Hallowed Gift customised for the purpose could likely substitute for decades of study and resource-building, or shore up weak points in some other aspect of your ability with the Litanies. Clarity is a boon for study in it's own right. Sublime Fusion, though you'd be weakening your ability to use pre-existing methods if you're trying to carve your own, better, path. Geometric Investment or other world travel to track down Dominion merchants and expats; they're not *complete* isolationists. A Ring of Power with a relevant mandate would be, as such things invariably are, an incredible boon. There are several Fruits of the Grove which could be relevant, and a custom one for the purpose could be bred if you are willing to wait. Strength, ability to do things, and general-purpose magic of all contribute to your ability to push yourself forwards in important ways. Also, I should be clear - should it seem like a productive use of your term of service, you do potentially have access to the hyperbolic time training universes for the purposes of advancing your studies."

The accumulated Orden words in general are organised in some hitherto unmentioned manner but this one Tiffany wants to pin to a board.

Dawn for the voice, Clarity and Lesser Clarity are new, Sublime Fusion and a Ring and Fruits...

"Hyperbolic time training universes," she says. Touch of a tongue-twister. "How - expensive are those?"

The words are sort of scrolling up for a while and then disappearing once the reasonable space between them fills up.

"Assuming we mean one with a ratio of, say, only a thousand to one, and no great size or other significant features. They cost a moderate exertion of effort on my behalf, or a substantial amount of effort from one of the handful of people I've taught the art, to create. Once created, they last forever. Access to them - designed training grounds designed for the purpose in other ways, even, would not be limited by price, but by if your mentor or commanding officer feels it is an appropriate choice for your development, which it might not be if you need field experience or new resources rather than time spent grinding, if the isolation or dedication is harming you, or if you seem to be intent on spending the entire duration of your service to us in three days of grinding that don't cash out to actual benefits on our end. The latter doesn't seem to be your problem, but the policy is an important one."

Tiffany of course noticed this a while ago, and has been waiting for a pleasant-sounding excuse to request a chat log.

"Mm, yes, my problems are more along lines like 'if not all death is equal in difficulty to banish, that implies that all that would still not be sufficient to drag people out of the Pit'—oh, and would it be possible for some of your words to not scroll away entirely? I sort of want to pin that one down until I recognise all the words."

Three days of grinding?—three thousand, and six hundred etc, if they're counting their own contracts as subjective time not sidereal. The one-quarter leave didn't vanish when she asked about it either...

"Indeed, most normal banishing magic - indeed most forms of resurrection magic are not enough to save souls from the pit. Against the Priestess's Extinguishing Touch, not even the Undying King's art of immortality is enough, though it is sometimes sufficent against glancing blows from the General's sword. And Extinguished souls are not suffering, I suppose. Such is the mercy of Hell."

He will wave his hand and create a notebook with a big classified sticker on the front, with log of all their conversation thus far in it. It will continue filling up

Notebook! ♥ Quick flick through to check how far back is recorded, such as 'before or after arriving here'.

"I have not read about the Undying King—do you think I should stop asking questions of you until I've read through all of this, so you know how much context I have?"

"Please do read all of the options, yes."

They're on the same page then.

She gestures acknowledgement and gets back to reading.
