"They clearly do." Sigh.

A fairy messenger informs Jake's girlfriend that she can visit him by taking a summons to Arda or taking the one specifically for her, which is just so she can visit and doesn't involve imprisoning her or anything.

She shows up. She wants to know if there's any privacy to be had.

It's a planet, they can go really far away from everyone else pretty trivially.

Any privacy with beds or the ability to fly, ideally the second one.

The magic-disabled area has beds and the rest of the planet has the ability to fly.

Off they zoom.

Good for them. Maitimo patiently inquires of Agueda Silva whether she would like to defend hostages demon.

"Can she pay my rate?" asks Agueda Silva.

"I don't think she has any money, but if you'd otherwise take the case I could endeavor to persuade the court to cover it."

"It doesn't seem as interesting for precedent-setting as the last one, but I do set my rate such that I'll happily represent even very boring clients who pay it."

The courts are worried about the precedent it sets to pay for whatever defense lawyer anywhere in any dimension the client requests. They have a long debate about whether daeva should be allowed to earn money after arrest to pay for lawyers of their choice. They conclude this should probably be allowed, as long as representation remains adequate without it, and Trelane is so informed.

"Uh, how am I supposed to do that from here?"

"This just occurred to them as something you should have the right to do, so I think they're still making arrangements, but they'll set up a portal to the portal planet with rails and then if you'd like I think you can fill trains and they'll have someone else verify them?"

"Okay... at what rate?"

"LIke I said, this was only recently established in court as something that should be allowed, I don't think they have any details set yet. Eventually they'll allow anyone to do it and then there'll be competition and you can go to whoever pays best, but it might take a little time for private organizations to figure out how to take advantage."

Sigh. "The person I killed is completely fine right now and you guys know it and you're being so dumb about trying to figure out how to punish me for it!"

"I'm sorry you feel that way."

It takes ten days and three hours - five for the news to reach Endorë, five for a lightleaper back, three hours for setup - and then there are five Dwarven organizations vying for prison labor. Three are in fact running supply trains, with a second set of demons for verification; one of the other ones does starships and space stations, and the fifth lets people at home write in with requests and proposed payments for them and then collates them for her.

...okay, how much does she have to make to get a really good lawyer?

She could pay Agueda Silva for the whole trial with like two weeks of train-filling.

That's not so bad. She fills trains. She prefers ones that are well-specified enough that she can read while she does them.

This is easy to accommodate.

" - this particular demon might be cooperating but if you wanted to hurt more people this way - how closely are they screening -"

"Are they even screening?"

"They're doing x-rays, but can think of a couple creative ways to get around that and I heard of x-rays this morning."
