"Grandmother gives me magic every day, just like she did for my father, and his father before him, and I'm not sure about before that but maybe to one of his parents too. But I live all the way down here on Golarion, and it's hard for her to reach here from there, so she asked one of her crows to join me since she has an easy time reaching them anywhere. So she gives him the power, and then he gives me as much of it as I can hold so I can help people with it."

"Oh, this isn't your literal grandmother?"

"I'm not really sure what you mean - I've never had any other grandmother, not that I can remember."

"I had two grandmothers. One was my mother's mother and one was my father's mother. Is it different here?"

"Oh, that's what you mean. No, she was my father's grandmother too, not his mother, and I think that was always true. My father must have had a mother too, I just never met her and I can't ask him since he died when I was young. I think my mother might still be in Kyonin, so maybe she has parents and I have a grandmother like yours too?"

"So the grandmother who gives you spells is a more distant ancestor who gives you spells - how?"

"You know, I'm not really sure. I've never asked before."

Ember turns to Soot, and talks with her for a bit. She then answers Kybele.

"Soot says they aren't allowed to tell mortals how to make witches, since Grandmother had to sign a treaty about it, but that usually you have to be pretty powerful in order to give some of it out like that."

"Pardon my curiosity, but would your grandmother happened to be named Andoletta?"

"Soot sometimes calls her that, but I've only ever known her as grandmother."

"Who's Andoletta?"

"An empyreal lord. She runs - or helps run with Erastil, I'm not sure - the fourth level of heaven."

"Ah, I see. I need to head back to the library, I have so much to catch up on."

It's at about this point that the first of the crusaders arrive at the third floor.

"Kybele! Voyager! and Camellia and Ember too! I'm glad to see you're alright. We were nervous there when we saw that blast take the roof off, but it looks like you made it through just fine."

"And since she didn't show up to fight us, I assume you dealt with Minagho too. Good work, lass; I'd have liked to do something about her myself, if I could manage it, but it's much more important that she was dealt with than how."

"She got away, so perhaps one day you'll have the chance, but she got away bleeding and terrified."

Staunton grins, the look somewhat at odds with his generally dour appearance.

"Good, serves her right."

"Indeed, it's always a fine occasion when the demons are forced to turn their tail. They'll regret having chosen to target Kenabres. Excellent work, Curator, and to the rest of you as well. I suppose under the circumstances I can overlook your earlier foolishness, Voyager."

That is probably the best concession available. "Prelate, I'm told the Church owns the library. Are you very attached to it? I've left my own library very far behind and miss it pretty keenly."

"Certainly. Frankly, it's the least we can do; I'll talk to Rathimus about giving you access to the stipend, though it'll be a bit before we can fund any real repairs between raising Terendelev and rebuilding the city unless Nerosyan decides to be uncommonly generous."

"I can fix up the books while waiting for help with the structure."

"Oh, I remember you now! You met my father and I, when we first came to this city. You looked pretty different then, though."

"I don't forget faces, and I don't remember seeing yours before. I'd recognize the burn scars, too."

"But it's true, I just didn't have those back then! You and the other knights tied us to stakes, and started lighting the bonfires. He died in the fire, but one of your knights changed his mind and rescued me from the fire before dying too. Don't you remember?"

"Don't be absurd, burning at the stake hasn't been a legal punishment for demon cultists since the third... crusade..."

As he finishes his sentence, Hulrun's eyes catch on Ember's ears, and his words lose a bit of their surety.
