It's very hard to exist without drones in Zmavlimu'e.
The mean Keeper has four dozen and one drones. The barest minimum needed to survive as considered by most people is two – one butler and one valet, and that doesn't count the drones that would account for your income stream. Though now, it's much more common for Keepers to be the breadwinners and not merely rely on owning drones that do all the work.
Konrad doesn't have any. Or more precisely, he doesn't keep any. His parents gave him drones for his allotment, of course, but he instead had them take them back on a very favorable indefinite lease. He has always preferred to do as many things himself.
It's very ironic that he doesn't, because he works as a drone trainer. A very good one, in fact. He's very, very good at doing proactivity training, which is usually finicky and difficult for most trainers. He knows martial arts, shooting, and survivalism, so he sells most of the drones he trains to the military to be sergeant drones. The others are usually sent to him to be trained as valets, though with them he only does proactivity training without skill training – they have to go to technical school for that.
Some people say that it's easy for him because he's half drone. This is not meant to be a compliment.
Having drones in Zmavlimu'e is expected. It's expected that you have drones that will do laundry for you, that will grocery shop for you, that will clean your house, that will manage your schedule, that will fill out and file your forms. Konrad doesn't really find doing any of these things particularly aversive, and, again, he much prefers doing things himself.
