He studies to be an advocate for Nirvana.
He takes a lot of breaks from his studies. The instructors say that it's healthier that way. If his breaks end up long enough that he never actually becomes an advocate, well, he'd be far from the first. Not everyone is cut out for it.
He's on an extended break when he's approached by a bat.
"Um, I have some news I'm supposed to give you, but it might not be great news, so I'm supposed to check if now is an okay time? I mean I'm assuming it's an okay time since I was able to find you at all, but I know sometimes--"
"Okay! Um, so, it's about your friend, the one you asked people to try to find out news about, um, apparently they found him. Except. He's off being a lawyer for Hell?"
"I know I can't change the outcome of his trial, I'm not stupid. But -- you said he's off being a lawyer--"
"Apparently he's really good at it! For values of good that don't involve having any sense of ethics!"
"If I thought he would be bad at it I would be less concerned."
He's lying.
"Um, just checking, you know that devils don't have free will, right?"
He's already flying in his best guess for the direction of Nirvana's advocate training.
"I'm not just going to abandon him."
That is not an answer to her question but also Nirvana spent her first several months here carefully teaching her about the importance of letting people make their own choices even if you think those choices were bad! It was really frustrating!
"...Good luck?"
She flies off.
