Contact with the greater multiverse has been, to nobody's surprise, the biggest upheaval in all of history next to the birth of sentimanity¹ itself. So much new technology! So many new languages! So much more potential to get into pointless arguments on the Internet!

This last thing, of course, has consumed the majority of Arpeggio's free time for over half a year. Which isn't really surprising, since id² is the lead moderator for one of the most popular boards on the leading forum online, Crowdsourced Sanity Checks³. It's not that the surge in activity was inherently unwelcome - the board frequently blows up when particularly juicy stories are posted and lurkers post links to their other social media. The thing that's been really raising Arpeggio's blood pressure has been the uptick in longtime users complaining about aliens being assholes or making insane judgment calls that detract from productive discussion.

It's all out of ids hands now, though. There's a new board, specifically for offworlders to post on, with a team of moderators chosen by the CSC moderators and users. It's not that offworlders have been kicked out of CSC entirely! But the guidelines are much tighter, now. When the board goes live, there's a pinned post already in place:

Welcome to Crowdsourced Sanity Checks Multiversal! Please read these rules before making a new post. If you still have questions after reading the rules, message the moderator helpline to be connected to a randomly selected moderator who will work with you to resolve any confusion. Be prepared for a delay of up to two hours.

  1. Be respectful, both of the other users of this board and of any other people in your conflict. The intent of this board is not to castigate anyone who behaved poorly, but to help people identify if they have behaved in ways that they want to change going forward.
  2. Only post true stories that happened to you. If you have a friend who's involved in a situation you think belongs here, encourage them to make a post! If you want to sound out reader reactions to a plot point in a story you're writing, head over to Crowdsourced Sanity Checks Creative Writing. If you have evidence that a post is fabricated, message the moderator helpline. Do not accuse a poster of violating this rule in the comments.
  3. Be honest. Smudging⁴ details for privacy is acceptable, but it's important to depict the events of your post in such a way that other users can pass an accurate judgment.
  4. Piggybacking on another user's post is not permitted. If you suspect that a post you read features you or someone you know, message the moderator helpline. Do not directly post your side of the story in the comments.
  5. Be prepared for translation difficulties! Any language that can be rendered on this forum is permitted for both posts and comments. If you are experiencing persistent machine translation errors, message the translator helpline to be connected to a randomly selected sitewide translator. Do not start translation debates in the comments.
  6. This is a board primarily focused on carer⁵ perspectives. The judgments drawn will be filtered through carer cultural lenses. If you feel other users are being unfair to you or someone else in your post, it is your responsibility to edit the original post to clarify how your cultural norms differ from theirs. If you are unfamiliar with common carer cultural norms, this post has links to several articles written for a variety of audiences.

After your post goes up, by default it will stay open for 72 hours. If you want to request the discussion on your post be closed sooner than that, message the moderator helpline. Posts with productive discussion may stay open longer than that. Posts may also be closed early at moderator discretion. When a post is closed, a summary of the discussion will be posted. If you're interested in applying to the summary team, message the moderator helpline. Please note that this board is not focused on reaching consensus and that summaries will reflect the discussion, not a judgment imposed by the summary team. If you feel that the summary for a post is biased or inaccurate, message the moderator helpline.

This board aims to be productive for all users, including people who behaved poorly. Personal attacks on users who behaved poorly are not permitted. If you experience harassment based on something that was said on this board, contact the moderator helpline. If a moderator treats you poorly, fill out the abuse form.

We hope that all users enjoy their time here. Happy sanity checking!

² Third-person singular animate pronoun, chosen mainly because of the similarity to the word "it."

³ Roughly equivalent to r/AmITheAsshole. The name of the board rhymes in the language it was founded in.

⁴ Fudging.
