This is certainly revealing, enough so that he can ignore the oblique insult to his sister. It probably wasn't intentional.

"How so? I've not noticed anything particularly weird about Scott. Erica creeps me out a little, sure," he admits.

"As far as I can tell, though, Scott's only sign of weirdness is that he hangs out with her."

"He's awkward, and it's not shyness. The guy isn't shy at all, he's downright friendly. But he thinks about things in the same way Erica does, very twisty but not clever? It's like they're working on some parallel track to everyone else."

Maybe, Liam thinks, it's just that they don't buy into the whole popularity contest the rest of the school has going on, or the hype around sports that seems to be universal to American schools even more than British ones.

"So, what, he does things like volunteer at the vet clinic, and that's a sign we all need to avoid him?"

Oops. That was probably a little too defensive.

"I didn't know he does that. Maybe it's just Erica."

He nods. "Maybe."

Success? Liam's going to call that at least a partial success.

David certainly seems thoughtful.

And Liam has class to get to.

History is fairly uneventful.

After that, he has French. Allison waves.

Liam grins back at her as he slides into his seat.

"Good afternoon," he says, in French so as not to annoy the teacher.

This teacher is less strict about it, but he's certainly endearing himself to her.

Allison doesn't seem inclined to talk, but when they pair off for a brief exercise, she comes his way.

Oh, good, that means he doesn't have to potentially annoy people by getting in the way of working with their favourite partners.

He smiles at her, with about 50% of his maximum wattage.

"Hi, wanna work together?"

"Works for me!"

They're supposed to tell each other about activities they like to do, using their available vocabulary.

Mostly she talks about how she likes running and jumping, which is at least accurate, if not precise.

Liam talks about how he likes drawing, painting, and singing. He also likes talking to people.

He's picking up French pretty quickly, but his grammar and sentence construction are ahead of his vocabulary. He knows Rowan always has the opposite problem, which would be more helpful if they were studying the same language.

Unfortunately, he just has Allison, who seems to be quite taken with him.

French proceeds, and then it's on to Choir.

Meanwhile, Rowan is just leaving Orchestra when she runs into someone.

Or more accurately, he into her.

"Hey. We're both in AP Calc, let's walk together."

"Okay."

Rowan searches her memory for his name, but comes up blank even though she knows Liam's talked about him.

"Sorry, I can't remember your name," she admits.

"Stiles Stilinski. I'm in the group of maladjusted nerds who run this school."

"...Okay. I'm Rowan Pender, but you probably knew that."

Stiles Stilinski. Alliteration makes things easier to remember, so she probably won't forget that one again.

"Which sort of nerd are you, other than the sort who takes AP Calc?"

"Mythology, certain kinds of history, biology. I play an MMO, if you know what that is."

Calculus! So exciting! Or at least educational.

It is certainly that. Rowan is at the stage where she can pretty easily keep up with the class, so she has time to continue the conversation.

"MMOs aren't really my thing, but I like history. Which kinds do you prefer?"

"Bloody. Human sacrifice, slave revolts, that kind of thing."

Rowan nods.

"That's certainly one of the more exciting parts of history." Exciting said in a tone which half implies the opposite.

"Personally, I like Medieval and Classical history. The older parts of Greek and Roman history shade into mythology, essentially, which is interesting in a different way."

"I don't know, mythology is usually more interesting than whatever the people who wrote it were doing. Early Mesopotamia, that's interesting."

"I agree, but are you sure that we are not biased in favour of mythology by its greater survivability?" Rowan argues.

"We know very little about the founding of Rome, or the reality of the Trojan War; all we have are the myths and a few archaeological clues. Personally, I would much rather know the true story, even if it is not as glorious and dramatic as the legends."

"History isn't actually a career goal for me, I'll probably just do forensics. I don't think I take it as seriously as you do."
