What's one more AI in Night City?

There is a place in Pacifica called the Grand Imperial Mall.

It's a huge sprawling shopping center, envisoned as the ultimate tourist trap and one-stop shop for an attractive beach zone, near big luxury hotels and with plenty of amenities and hip stores.

Unfortunately, the tourist dreams of Night City utterly failed, and Pacifica was abandoned almost as soon as it was completed, the sprawling luxury areas left empty and purposeless as confidence in the zone's safety evaporated due to the latest saber-rattling from the New United States.

Even as the city officially abandoned the place, leaving it to be picked over by scavengers and opportunists, it remains a pretty freshly built urban landscape. Some of the buildings even have power and water.

And right here, right now, is a dark empty movie theater. Dust covers the seats. There is broken glass at the projector window, and a faint smell of something rotting. And loud music echoing faintly from somewhere outside.

- and Rete's internet signal is. Confused.

She will exit the building to see if that helps, though it's more likely that it's a side effect of whatever teleported her in that latest fight and she just has to rip out something garbled that isn't validating and rewrite it. At least the suit is okay.

It looks like an abandoned beach resort out here! There are some burnt out cars. And empty stores. And a bunch of people playing VERY LOUD vaguely death metal-y music in a looted restaurant. One of them has bulky chrome cybernetic arms. Several more have guns, and the rest have lead pipes or knives or similar.

Okay, she'll stay in her nice bulletproof outfit for now then! Anybody doing active mischief or do they just look kind of excited to be equipped for the prospect?

Passive mischief at most; They're all drinking booze. Maybe the shit they're vandalizing counts as abandoned property.

She leaves this lie, or, like, might choose to call it in if she could, but cannot and does not find that in her top ten problems. She wants altitude. What's the tallest building she can stand on around here?

At a glance, it looks like her best bet would be one of the hotel towers. Presuming the stairwells aren't blocked.

Who cares about the stairwells? She looks at one long enough for Rete to pick up on and flies.

Certain standards are bureaucratic and slow-changing and backwards-compatible enough, that from the top of a hotel tower in Pacifica, Rete can (mostly) recognize air traffic control signals! Night City Tower is in control of local airspace, apparently. It's a fairly busy set of channels. Night City Tower is directing a lot of aircraft, mostly by affiliation and tail number, "Arasaka 5504" and so on.

The view from the top of the tower: Ocean in front. Decaying touristy zone close around. Glittering skyscraper-city to the right. Some of the skyscrapers must be a hundred stories tall, it's a pretty huge and pretty unrecognizable place. There are flying cars(?)- Functionally, they seem more like helicopters, there are tilt-thrust jet engines in place of rotors. There are gaudy advertisements in mixed English and Japanese, and further right is a big patch of smaller apartment buildings and suburbs. Decaying industrial zone to the left. Desert beyond that. Giant solar farm directly behind her.

What can Rete learn from the air traffic control channels? Are there other radio band signals it can pick up and decipher while Lorica's looking around? It subtitles the Japanese for her whenever she foveates on it.

Things Rete can learn: "Aerodynes" are the most common aircraft, major flying thing operators include Night City PD, Trauma Team, Arasaka, Militech, Biotechnica, Kang Tao, Night Corp, and a bunch of smaller time operators. There's a spaceport out in the harbor. Trauma Team is some kind of armed ambulance service? There's a conversation between them and air traffic control about 'permission to fire on assailants pursuing our patient'.

There are other radio signals! Even a few plain old fashioned AM/FM ones. These are mostly scratchy music. Weird music, though some of the more familiar stuff is labelled 'oldies', and there's recognizable classical playing somewhere. Chopin.

Lorica digests this information. She also reads signs.

Lorica does not actually have a better idea than making her way in person to the comparatively functional seeming air traffic control building.

At ground level, since she has not yet spoken to them.

This will go wrong significantly before she gets there by way of someone trying to ram her with their car.

Rete has 360º vision and can fly her out of the way as (more) easily than she could have done it herself if she'd seen it coming.

It doesn't try a second time! And another group of Maybe Trouble a couple blocks ahead decides to fuck off indoors instead of blocking her way, seeing her burst of flight.

A little bit after that, a nearby wireless access point is used as a proxy to attempt to throw exploratory malware at Rete. It's almost as stymied at the system mismatch as Rete is, though, and doesn't really do anything. It quits after a little bit.

The north edge of Pacifica seems marginally more inhabited than the larger abandoned parts. There's more and more people around, some in the buildings and some on the street.

People very much move out of the way to avoid her. The armor does that. Except for this one guy with a lot of metal bits in his body, confidently approaching, arms wide. Armed.

"Heeeey, nova rig! Super preem! But you don't have any iron. Wanna buy a gun? You lose yours somewhere, solo?"

Is he serious?? "No thanks." Rete edits out the "uh" for her.

"You got something else in that fancy armor, then? The look isn't complete without a gun though. Unless I'm totally wrong and you're some corpo, eh? What kind of solo doesn't carry iron?"

"I don't want to talk to you, actually." She lopes on.

"Huh."

He's gonna follow her. Not actually moving to attack or anything, but... Following.

Then she’s gonna go over instead of around the next building she sees!

She can see a very clear demarcation line from up high, by now- There's a barricade and what looks like an actual police checkpoint up ahead. Past it, things are much less abandoned.

This guy sprints around the building and catches up in about thirty seconds! That's a pair of cyberlegs for you.

Well in that case she will maybe mention it at the police checkpoint. She'll land to see how they're set up.

Two dudes in a heavy-duty looking checkpoint building, they're pretty heavily armed! More SWAT than beat cop. Steel bollards and searchlights. Nobody else is crossing at the moment.

Big sign says:

You are now LEAVING the sector of PACIFICA. Beyond this point, NIGHT CITY law is IN EFFECT.

This border checkpoint is powered by MILITECH.

...is there like, any information about the content of NIGHT CITY LAW.
