(Demane relaxes fractionally at this. Once Kulingile arrives, it should be obvious to everyone that there is no point in Harry trying to run away, which will make this much easier.)

He still thinks it's the safer path. But the bigger concern here is the temporal prime directive.

Some contamination is, obviously, inevitable at this point. But if he managed to stun this guy, went back to the shuttle, and then like, died of thirst, all they'd have is the locked shuttle. They probably just can't get into the shuttle (he thinks? it's pretty unclear when he is). If he melted everything delicate before he laid down to die then even if they got in it wouldn't do them that much good. He's not sure how much damage he could do with a hand phaser to the nacelles, which are external and therefore more important, but with any luck they'll just be inscrutable. If they keep the shuttle around until like, the 22nd century, they'll probably get a bunch of use out of it anyway but he's on some isolated island, maybe everybody here will just die for some horrible past reason and then the shuttle will get washed into the ocean.

So that's the best case scenario.

Medium case, he tries to escape and this guy cuts his throat. They have all his stuff and the shuttle somewhat intact. It's closed but not locked, so they find the manual override and get it open. There isn't anything immediately working, he thinks, but there's probably a lot you can learn by taking it apart. They'd also has his phaser and tricorder. Can you like, conquer the world with one phaser? Prooobably not? The tricorder is actually probably the worst, you can learn a lot about the world with one of those, and maybe even more from the world model implicit in how it presents its readings.

Worst case, they take him alive. They torture him until he cooperates. They get him to fix the shuttle and take over the world. They get warp travel hundreds of years early, so they're able to conquer all the local species, and form basically the evil federation. Very bad!

"Not bad, kid, but there's another option you haven't thought of."

Oh! He could convince everybody on the island to come with him in the shuttle and return to the future somehow! Then the only impact is that everybody on this island vanished. Could just have been smallpox or whatever.

He'd have to figure out how to get back to the future but it can't be that hard, Kirk managed it in the 23rd century.

That's not actually what he was thinking of but he can't say that because he's a figment of Harry's imagination.

He already dropped his phaser, which makes fighting harder. He still thinks he's pretty unlikely to be captured alive: knives don't have a stun setting, and his captors seem to be kids? On the other hand-

At this point, a shadow falls over the beach.

It's a huge golden dragon blotting out the sun. At least several times the size of Harry's shuttle.

With absolutely no conscious thought, Harry bolts for the shuttle.

This is such an unexpected and stupid thing for Harry to do that Demane drops his knife in surprise, only nicking Harry's neck slightly in the process. 

"Grab him," he calls, but unnecessarily. Kulingile is already moving.

Kulingile reaches out one clawed foot and carefully picks Harry up.

Harry tries to shoot Kulingile, but he doesn't actually have his phaser.

"I am not going to eat you," Kulingile observes calmly. His voice sounds strangely resonant, as if it is echoing several times in different octaves. "... Unless Demane tells me to."

"Of course he will not tell you to eat him!"

"Ask him what he is doing here."

"What are you doing here?" He peers at Harry.
