"You can't be serious."
Outside opens directly onto several feet of pale blue ocean water. A few tropical fish quickly dart out of sight after the crunch of the opening door.
The beach is steps away through the shallow water.
Wow, this does look like Earth. It also looked like Earth from orbit, and also he was trying to go to Earth. So all of that makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is that he was allowed to crash. It took him nearly two hours from the warp core breach until he hit the ground. Even if (somehow?) traffic control didn't notice him coming out of warp, the warp core detonation would have been visible from the ground even during the day. For that matter, he saw the North American west coast as he fell: it would have been visible from Starfleet Academy itself. But nobody rescued him?
After a few minutes of thinking, Harry has come up with a list of possible causes.
- He's been transported to an alternate universe where humans never evolved, or maybe died out before they could achieve spaceflight.
- He's been transported back in time.
- Civalization on Earth has been destroyed, presumably by the Borg (or the Klingons??? based on his vision ??? while in transwarp).
- Humans on Earth have ascended to a higher plane of existence, abandoning material reality.
- T̵r̵a̵f̵f̵i̵c̵ ̵c̵o̵n̵t̵r̵o̵l̵ ̵k̵n̵e̵w̵ ̵h̵e̵ ̵w̵a̵s̵n̵'̵t̵ ̵g̵o̵i̵n̵g̵ ̵t̵o̵ ̵h̵i̵t̵ ̵a̵n̵y̵t̵h̵i̵n̵g̵ ̵i̵m̵p̵o̵r̵t̵a̵n̵t̵ ̵a̵n̵d̵ ̵d̵e̵c̵i̵d̵e̵d̵ ̵t̵o̵ ̵l̵e̵t̵ ̵h̵i̵m̵ ̵d̵i̵e̵ ̵b̵e̵c̵a̵u̵s̵e̵ ̵h̵e̵ ̵e̵n̵d̵a̵n̵g̵e̵r̵e̵d̵ ̵n̵e̵a̵r̵-̵E̵a̵r̵t̵h̵ ̵s̵p̵a̵c̵e̵ ̵t̵r̵a̵v̵e̵l̵.̵
- Some combination of the above.
Upon reflection, he thinks these are all roughly equally plausible, except for the traffic control one, which despite what the angry academy instructor in his head is insisting doesn't seem likely.
In none of those scenarios is he getting rescued. Well, maybe. If this is his home universe, maybe the Vulcans will come check out what happened to Earth at some point. But if it was the Borg the Vulcans are presumably very busy or assimilated, and if it's the ascension thing then Harry would bet the Vulcans ascended too. They seem like the type more than humans, really.
So. He needs to repair the shuttle. It's clear at a glance that if it's possible at all, it's weeks of work.
Does the replicator work?
So he needs to find food and water. Which means he needs to explore the island.
He grabs a phaser, a tricorder, and a bag. It's a massive pain that his house is in the water. He strips down to his underwear, puts the clothes in his bag, and awkwardly wades to shore.
The beach is still deserted when he gets there.
Is he going to do anything in particular at that point?
Get dressed! He awkwardly dries off as best he can by kind of brushing the water off, then puts his uniform back on.
Okay. First thing he needs is water. He sets off down the beach, under the theory that 1) rivers run to the ocean and 2) he won't get lost if he's on a 1-dimensional track.
Pretty soon after he starts walking: there's some rustling in the jungle over that way. Maybe even the crack of a stick or two breaking.
The rustling gets louder, in the direction that Harry is facing.
A moment or two later, there is a knife at his throat and a slim but strong dark-skinned hand gripping his phaser hand to point it at the ground. "Don't move," says a voice in thickly accented English, low and menacing.
He calls something in a language Harry doesn't recognize, one with clicks. The rustling recedes.
a language Harry doesn't recognize
Don't be absurd. Regardless of what language it left Demane's mouth in, it will arrive in Harry's ears as English.
Kim is only about half focused on being held at knifepoint. Being held at knifepoint by (probably) a human has updated his possibilities list:

Time travel! And he's in deep trouble, because this is definitely a temporal prime directive violation. The angry traffic control officer in his head has been replaced by an angrier Temporal Investigations officer.
Between trying not to die and trying to remember what you're supposed to do if you go back in time he doesn't actually notice that the UT is translating here.
Demane is still behind him, so Harry doesn't see his eyes widen at the use of his native language by this bizarre foreign man. The knife at his throat doesn't move.
"Are there others with you?" (Still in thickly accented English.)
