...Technically, madam, under the most recent revisions to Paragraph Fourteen Subsection C of the Military Contingencies (Counterespionage) Act, this branch of the Supreme Chancellor's security acts under the direct authority of the Senate within their scope. They're not Military or Judicial like the Jedi Order. It was one of the concessions to the civil liberties faction-

"Son, this will be a lot easier if you do exactly as Darth Mourne says. Stars know we should have."

Absolutely Not, Shaak Ti Do Not Say That.

"I think you don't want there to be a Sith running around after they possessed a Senator any more than the rest of us do."

...The Chancellor's guests were - uh, the late Senator Fema Baab and her husband. The building's main computer has a list of all residents and guests with time of entry and exit and it transmits that information to a secure server. It's very private and encrypted but they're the Chancellor's office.

...All transmissions were blocked very recently and someone's done a really thorough hacking job to cover their tracks - let a few out here and there, obscured the time jamming began, and this data doesn't look right - they're pulling up all recent entrances and exits - huh, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker left a short while ago, guest of Senator Amidala -

- The security recordings in the Chancellor's rooms have been tampered with. Clumsily. Loops, blackouts, it looks like someone did it from across the room with a stick. But pretty thoroughly.

Starting at what time, exactly --

-- she also pulls up the feed for Senator Amidala's room, just after the Incident, on something of a whim.

Hey! Reviewing security recordings at a crime scene is one thing, that's a live feed of a resident's personal chambers, they're ridiculously secure and protected by extensive privacy laws, she has no authority to just do that, arguably the Chancellor has no authority to just do that - well, there are exceptions under the present state of emergency -

"An emergency, this clearly is. Show her. Want us to, Senator Amidala would."

She seems to have fainted, or something, shortly after the timestamp when the Chancellor's security recordings start to show signs of tampering. She is swiftly found by her protocol droid who summons an emergency medical response, but after a minute or so she is seen to open her eyes and weakly order him to cancel it. She is then seen to laboriously climb to her feet and stagger to bed, where she still is now, lying awake and looking at the ceiling with one hand on her belly.

"...Well that is very suspiciously timed," she says, having scrubbed over everything after the collapse was confirmed and the protocol droid showed up.  "That's almost immediately after the initial burst of Darkness.  And the poking-it-with-a-stick-or-possibly-the-Force security interference on Palpatine's office started between the burst of Darkness and this."

"Officers. Place the building on lockdown and search every inch. I think we had better call on Senator Amidala."

"...I believe Senator Amidala should see a Jedi Healer; there's a strong likelihood, in my estimation, that the Sith we're hunting tried to drain her, if that wasn't a backlash of some kind.  How and why I couldn't possibly say.

"...We should also make sure that the body in the Chancellor's office actually is Chancellor Palpatine, by as stringent means as possible, because I really don't like that blackout's timing.

"Assuming it was the Sith, which I think we safely can, they would have had to have been already in the room to strike that quickly."

...

Is nobody going to say the Jedi are obviously suspects, the only suspects, in the murder of the Chancellor?

...The Jedi don't, actually, pay them.

But maybe better wait until it's obvious what won't get them in trouble, when the Senate meets.

"I'm sorry, Masters Jedi - I, uh, you can't give us orders. This is a crime scene - Chancellery Security needs to sweep it - look for the murder weapon, or weapons," don't glance at the lightsabers they haven't put away that are maybe the only weapon in the galaxy that could do that, he's seen fusioncutter accidents they make people burst lightsabers are some kind of Jedi voodoo - "- but uh I'm uh sure the Senator would love to see you?"

"We can't give you orders, no, but you can't give us orders.  Sith are the Jedi Order's primary concern and we have evidence of a hostile Force user right there.  Plus I'm quite sure you will find more than enough evidence of us arriving here long after the Senator and her husband died, if you check their temperature and compare rate of cooling to any given camera pointed at this part of the building, for our arrival.  I have a thermal imager in my mask, though I'm sure you wouldn't trust it, given I'm a suspect."

"Also, the murder weapon on the Chancellor was Force LightningSith Force Lightning.  It leaves a very distinct residue, empathically speaking.  The Jedi can't be suspects, they can't do that.  I suppose that does still leave me in the running but I have literally been under direct supervision of the Jedi Council the entire time."

...Fine.

Technically they're security, not forensics. Forensics are en route. They can make that en route extremely urgently

...Wait the Jedi totally can throw lightning my cousin's mechanic's droid's maker swears she saw them do it once.

Unfortunately forensics are limited by, oh, the laws of physics, perhaps the Jedi aren't familiar with those. First few hours after death, they can reasonably get time of death within, oh, half an hour, twenty minutes under great conditions. They don't know exactly what starting body temperature was! Maybe one of them had a mild fever! Maybe they were just chilly! The Chancellor's apartments' climate-control is set to probabilistically imitate spring on Naboo, they don't know what the exact temperature and humidity and airflow was in here! Maybe the imaginary sun came out! That's actually a security feature, they're trying to minimise side-channel data! They're looking at biochemical clocks here, which is how they can be as precise as they are - assuming none of these corpses happened to, for example, have a pol-pollen addiction, which causes poorly-understood metabolic fluctuations, or at this level of precision walk past someone who did, or have distant Twi'lek ancestry which for some inexplicable reason scrambles a whole host of biomarkers with almost no other detectable effects. Forensics is hard

...Coruscant Central Forensics is harvesting all the data it can to punt to a whole team of specialists, but they'll say right now there's no way they can rule out that - er - the deaths occurred after the arrival of the Jedi. Maybe they'll be able to say it's unlikely.

"Your cousin's mechanic's droid's maker is inadmissible hearsay, it is established fact for the past several thousand years that the Force tradition of the Jedi Order does not include throwing lightning, and even less includes Sith Force Lightning."  Also, have a kriffing copy of her mask's thermal imaging records - not that she remotely expects you'll believe she didn't fake it somehow, but they were cold when we got here.

Anyway.  They need to speak to Senator Amidala.  She was attacked by a Sith long before the Jedi entered the building.

Very well.

Rest assured they have plenty of data and testimony now.

Senator Amidala is suffering from a perfectly dreadful migraine that is not responding at all to pain medication and must be left to recover!

"It's fine, Threepio," she manages, though her voice is weak, it doesn't sound quite right, like she's slurring a little. She's leaning on the wall for support, and when she comes forwards she's ungainly on her feet, as though about to topple.

"...Masters. Is... everything all right?"

"Unfortunately, no.  We're here because we believe you may have been affected by a Sith."

...She is not going to let the Senator who seems like she may have had a stroke keep stumbling along without at least a diagnostic.

"A Sith?" Her eyes are round, round, round. "I did - feel something, it felt angry but, also so scared..."

She manages to straighten a little.

"I... feel all right now. Only- tired. Cold. It's hard to walk..."

"Padme," he interrupts, but gently, "you don't sound like yourself. Please. Allow me."

For the second time today, he can levitate someone off the ground and to the Halls of Healing.

She drifts along eerily in his grip. She seems - half-asleep, after a while. Occasionally she thrashes, starts awake as though struggling, especially when they go out into the cool air, and she cries a little, and seems to dislike bright light.

"...Unlike the Senator, this is."

"Indeed." He really rather dislikes the Dark Side of the Force. "To have done this to her... but why?"
